BP exit opens new front in West's campaign against Russia

(Reuters) - Energy major BP opened a new front in the West's campaign to isolate Russia's economy, with its decision to quit the oil-rich country the most aggressive move yet by a company in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Western allies have ramped up efforts to punish Russia with new sanctions including shuttering their airspace to Russian aircraft, cutting some of its banks off the SWIFT financial network and limiting Moscow's ability to deploy its $630 billion foreign reserves - measures that are expected to pulverize the country's financial markets and economy. BP, the biggest f...

Steve Bannon calls MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace a 'war criminal'

Far-right podcaster Steve Bannon took off after MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace, who previously served in George W. Bush's White House. According to Bannon, the ex-White House communications chief is a "war criminal."

Bannon is troubled by the support Ukraine is getting from the United States and cable news. According to Bannon, it's larger support for Ukraine than Fox News gave for the Iraq war. Fox frequently said that if people didn't support the Iraq war, they were anti-American, and peace protesters stood with the terrorists. Wallace no longer identifies as a Republican and has denounced her former party.

The NZ anti-vax movement’s exploitation of Holocaust imagery is part of a long and sorry history

During the anti-lockdown protests at parliament last year, I was told about a 15-year-old who stopped to ask someone why they were crying. The person replied they were Jewish and had been upset by Nazi imagery used by some protesters, including swastikas chalked on the ground.

Water bottle in hand, they set about washing these off, until a well-dressed, middle-aged woman threatened to kill them and parliamentary security ushered them away.

The local Jewish community sounded a warning about the “grotesque and deeply hurtful” appropriation of the Holocaust by protesters that, as the situation in Wellington suggests, went unheeded.

Targeting Putin’s inner circle and keeping Europe on board: Why Biden’s sanctions may actually work to make Russia pay for invading Ukraine

The Biden administration is delivering on its vow to impose “severe sanctions” against Russia for its military aggression against Ukraine.

The new sanctions announced on Feb. 24, 2022, will cut off Russia’s major banks and companies from Western financing and impose direct financial costs on many of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s chief political allies. The sanctions package will also restrict Russia’s access to semiconductor products and the technologies it needs to sustain its industrial sector and military capabilities.

And the next day, the U.S. and its European allies prepared sanctions against Putin personally – an important symbolic step although not likely to have significant impact.

Would Vladimir Putin actually be able to rule Ukraine?

Ukrainian resistance to Russia’s invasion has been fierce since Vladimir Putin attacked the country, raising questions about whether he’d be able to rule Ukrainians as he pleases if he’s ultimately successful in winning the war in military terms.

There are good reasons to believe that he wouldn’t. Even if victorious, Putin won’t be able to achieve what he wants because to ultimately win, he’ll need to govern a country conquered against its will.
