Biden admin warns of 'catastrophic' default as debt talks continue

WASHINGTON (AFP) — President Joe Biden's administration again warned Sunday of "catastrophic" consequences for the U.S. economy if the country defaults, as negotiations with Republicans over a debt deal are expected to resume in the week ahead.

Alarm bells are ringing over the possibility of a first-ever US default, with uncertainty over the actual date the government would stop being able to pay its bills.

Congressional Republicans are demanding budget cuts in exchange for lifting the so-called debt ceiling, while the White House has insisted for months that the nation's credit should not be up for negotiation.

'Just sheer paralysis': Chuck Todd roasts Republicans over their inability to dethrone Donald Trump

The race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination officially kicked off on November 15th, 2022 when former President Donald Trump declared his candidacy for the White House. Trump was joined by three others — ex-South Carolina governor and United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and ex-Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson — throughout the first few months of 2023.

Yet there are numerous additional potential hopefuls such as former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who like Hutchinson believe that they can mount formidable counter-campaigns to dethrone Trump as the defacto GOP frontrunner and defeat incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden in the general election.

Trump posts doctored video of Anderson Cooper speech mixed with out-of-context Biden clips

Donald Trump on Saturday posted a doctored video on social media that showed CNN's Anderson Cooper giving his controversial monologue about the dangers exposed by the network's Trump town hall, but interspersed with clips and images of President Joe Biden instead of the former president.

After Trump's New Hampshire town hall, Cooper defended the network while acknowledging public anger about platforming Trump, and enabling him to double down on debunked election fraud claims and further insult a woman he was just found liable for sexually assaulting and defaming. Cooper saw his fair share of criticism for the speech, including being accused of "gaslighting" Americans by his own friend.

Speaking to MSNBC on Friday, Nobel Prize-winning international economist Paul Krugman scorched House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for holding the debt ceiling hostage — and expressed his fears about the endgame of the situation.
