'You ain’t seen nothing yet': New analysis shows how Kevin McCarthy could lead the 'most dysfunctional Congress ever'

While Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has fought an uphill battle to victory, a new analysis is explaining why this may only be the beginning of the Republican chaos to come.

"You ain’t seen nothing yet," wrote Yahoo! News correspondent Andrew Romano, adding, "The unbridled chaos of this week’s speaker debacle simultaneously confirmed and compounded an unsettling truth: The United States could be on the cusp of its most dysfunctional Congress ever."

Matt Gaetz 'punked the hell' out of the GOP and they looked 'weak': former RNC head

Less than 12 hours after Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy overcame 15 votes worth of opposition from far-right members of his caucus to become House speaker, former Republican National Committee head Michael Steele claimed opposition leader Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) did irreparable damage to the GOP.

Late Friday night, Gaetz stunned his fellow House Republicans when he voted "present" on the 14th vote, thus denying McCarthy the victory he thought he had wrapped up. That led to a 15th round where McCarthy finally prevailed.

Two years after Jan. 6, Capitol attack casts long shadow over GOP that allows extremism to fester

Friday marks two years since the January 6 Capitol insurrection, when President Donald Trump incited thousands of supporters to violently storm Congress, attempting to overturn the 2020 election. The attack on the Capitol briefly shut down Congress as lawmakers fled for their safety from the mob, which included members of the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers and other violent extremist groups. Two years later, part of Congress has been effectively shut down again, this time because a group of far-right Republicans, including many who supported the January 6 insurrection, have blocked Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s attempt to become House speaker. We speak to Andy Campbell, senior editor at HuffPost and author of “We Are Proud Boys: How a Right-Wing Street Gang Ushered In a New Era of American Extremism,” as the House speaker vote drags on and the Proud Boys face trial for seditious conspiracy over their involvement in the insurrection.

Some Democrats fear a mass shooting on House floor — by a QAnon-Republican

WASHINGTON—Surprise quickly morphed into alarm for some at the Capitol this week as a post-Jan. 6 security measure vanished without warning just before Republicans reclaimed control of the House. Some Democrats fear there could be a mass shooting on the House floor at the trigger of one of the GOP’s newly expanded ranks of conspiracy-believing lawmakers.

“A lot of my Republican colleagues glorify violence and proudly display the firearms they have in their offices, so it just makes me nervous that we could have a workplace violent event. They’re not the most stable people,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) told Raw Story after voting for Speaker this week.

Rebel Republicans' 'dangerous' demands could rob House majority of 'strength and power': GOP's Pete Sessions

Watch: Marjorie Taylor Greene calls out fellow Republicans for being unreasonable

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who rose to infamy by promoting conspiracy theories about school shootings being faked and about the Rothschild family funding space lasers, accused some of her fellow Republicans of being unreasonable on Thursday.

In an interview with CNN's Manu Raju, Greene took aim at fellow MAGA Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) for refusing to support Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) no matter how many concessions he offered her.

Adam Schiff: The fear is not being thrown off a committee — it's what the GOP-led House will do in the 2024 election

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has been threatened by Republicans who want to remove him from the House Intelligence Committee because he was an impeachment lawyer for Donald Trump's first trial over the bribery of the president of Ukraine. But speaking to "The View" on Thursday, Schiff made it clear that being kicked off of a committee is the least of his concerns.

"There are much bigger concerns, frankly, about what they will do," Schiff said of the fringe members of the GOP. "McCarthy wanted to overturn the last election even after the violence of that day, and my primary concern is what if we have a truly contested election next time? What if we have one that is very close? We could see McCarthy leading Republicans to try to overturn the result. It was a grave danger to our democracy two years ago. It would be another grave danger to our democracy in the future, but before McCarthy threatens to throw anybody off their committee, you've got to be focused on whether he even gets that job."

The day democracy was tested: A deep dive into Trump's attempted coup on January 6

It was obvious that Donald Trump was likely to lose the 2020 presidential election at 11:20 p.m. EST on election night, when the Fox News Decision Desk called Arizona for Joe Biden.

The Copper State had gone Democratic just once since 1948, when Bill Clinton won by two points in his 1996 landslide. Without Arizona, Trump would have to win three of the five states left (Georgia, Nevada, and the Blue Wall states—Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania).

The Blue Wall states had supported Democratic candidates in every presidential election since 1992 except for the outlier 2016 race in which Trump scraped by with the help of voter suppression, Jill Stein, Cambridge Analytica, Julian Assange, James Comey, and Russia’s 50,000+ fake Twitter accounts.

'Meltdown mode': Supercut shows Fox News in full-blown despair over McCarthy debacle

Although Fox News has a reputation for spinning news stories in favor of the Republican Party, it seems the network has been unable to put a rosy gloss on the GOP's failure to nominate a Speaker of the House of Representatives for two consecutive days.

MSNBC's Ari Melber on Wednesday played a supercut of Fox News coverage of the House GOP's failed Speaker votes over the past two days, and most of the hosts did not pull any punches about how bad it looks for them.

Idaho killer 'planned' for a mass casualty event — and did it 'strategically': Former FBI profiler

Police have yet to release critical details of Bryan Kohberger, the Washington State University criminology graduate student arrested in connection with the grisly stabbing murders of four University of Idaho students, including any possible motive and link to the victims — due in large part to state law in Idaho that prohibits such details from being released until the criminal proceedings actually begin in that state.

But on Wednesday's edition of CNN's "The Lead," former FBI Special Agent and criminal profiler Mary Ellen O'Toole laid out what some of the details already released say about the crime — and potential other physical evidence that could say even more.
