'Chaos, crisis and confusion': House Dems ridicule Republicans over Speakership turmoil

The upcoming vote for Speaker of the House is another public display of the split intentions and motivations of the Republican party, Democrats are telling the public via social media.

Democrat Representative Grace Meng posted on Twitter, "If you've run out of Netflix shows, there's a new one out at 12pm-starring House Republicans. Instead of fighting inflation, they're fighting each other."

GOP Rep. Scott Perry trashes Kevin McCarthy after shout-filled caucus meeting goes off the rails

Following what has been reported as a contentious and obscenity-filled House Republican caucus meeting over a vote on the speakership, Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) a leader of the members who are leading a revolt against Rep. Kevin McCarthy trashed the California Republican for not giving into his factions demands.

Speaking to the press after the meeting broke up where McCarthy proclaimed he "earned' the speakership -- only to have Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) reportedly fire back "bullsh*t" -- Perry gave no indication that McCarthy is any closer to gaining their votes than before the meeting and things might have gotten worse.

Far-right 'hostage takers' poised to run House GOP — with Republican leaders powerless to stop them

On Tuesday, ahead of the swearing in of the new Republican House majority, the Huffington Post laid out how a small group of far-right lawmakers are poised to wield total power in the chamber — making Republican leadership, including Kevin McCarthy even if he manages to be elected Speaker, effectively subservient to their demands.

"With House Republicans holding just a four-vote majority, the influence of the party’s far right will only grow in the new Congress as each GOP vote holds sway. As Norm Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute observed to The New Yorker recently, 'When your margin is small, the problem is you’re held hostage,'" reported Matt Shuham and Christopher Mathias. "The hostage takers, in this case — a far-right coterie that includes Biggs as well as Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.) and Paul Gosar (Ariz.) — don’t all necessarily oppose McCarthy’s speakership. Greene has endorsed him and received significant concessions."

Meet the new MAGA generation: These newly-elected Republicans set to join Team MTG

Trumpist election deniers were soundly defeated in competitive midterm races this year, for the most part. But there's no shortage of far-right MAGA diehards who are joining Congress this week, mostly elected from safe Republican districts and states.

While the midterm elections served as a sweeping repudiation of fringe Trump-backed candidates in many swing states and purple districts, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's 21-point re-election victory in her rural district in northwestern Georgia makes clear that Trumpism is still alive and well in deep-red areas. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy predicted a "red wave" that never reached shore — and it's still not entirely clear that McCarthy can get himself elected speaker on Tuesday. Even so, there are 48 new Republicans entering Congress, at least half of whom count as election deniers.

Paul Krugman: Today's GOP 'fanatics' make me miss the old party of 'greed and cynicism'

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece takes stock of the Republican Party as it exists in 2023, and he finds that it's gone so far off the rails that he's nostalgic for the old GOP that was merely "greedy and cynical."

Krugman starts out by noting that the GOP used to use culture war appeals to win over the votes of social conservatives, but would proceed to ignore their concerns once elected in favor of doling out favors to the economically powerful.

'Still well short': GOP's Andy Biggs taunts Kevin McCarthy for not having the votes with hours to go

On Monday, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), one of the key members of the so-called "Never Kevin" bloc among House Republicans, took to Twitter to taunt Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for still lacking the votes to be elected Speaker of the House — with just hours to go before that vote is scheduled to take place.

"Even after the McCarthy Machine’s attempts to whip votes and smear my name for several weeks, McCarthy is still well short of the 218 threshold," wrote Biggs. "Our party still requires new leadership and I will continue to oppose McCarthy for House Speaker."

Marjorie Taylor Greene: GOP voters should be 'sickened' by 'me first' campaign to block Kevin McCarthy

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Monday night slammed fellow Republicans who are engaging in what she says is a cynical bid to make a name for themselves by blocking GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as House Speaker.

Writing on Twitter, Greene first pointed to a new editorial written by Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) in which he said he would work with moderate Democrats to elect a bipartisan Speaker of the House if anti-McCarthy Republicans were successful in tanking his bid.

'Always give each other mulligans': Republican blasted for saying George Santos deserves a 'second chance'

Many Republicans have been unwilling or reluctant to speak out about the scandal that has been dogging Rep.-Elect George Santos, the Queens/Long Island Republican who—according to the New York Times, CNN and others — lied about his history countless times. And some Republicans have outright defended Santos, including far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

But one outgoing GOP member of the U.S. House of Representatives who is willing to publicly criticize Santos is Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas. During a New Year’s Day 2023 appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” the 66-year-old conservative lawmaker urged Santos to think about resigning.

'There is a seat in hell waiting for this man': George Santos falsely claimed his mom died on September 11th

United States Congressman-elect George Santos (R-New York) may be able to dismiss criticisms about his fake résumé, his spurious claims about being "Jew-ish," his nonexistent college education, and his sketchy finances as mere "embellishments."

But what New York Magazine and Huffington Post contributor Yashar Ali pieced together late Wednesday night revealed that nothing is sacred for the embattled freshman lawmaker.

GOP is in a state of 'pure chaos' and is even flopping at political theater: columnist

Although the Republican Party is set to take over the House of Representatives with a narrow majority in a matter of mere days, the party finds itself beset by nonstop infighting and scandal.

As MSNBC columnist Hayes Brown argues, the GOP at the moment seems to be in a state of "pure chaos" and the party isn't even certain if current leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will have enough votes to achieve his long-held dream of becoming Speaker of the House.
