MAGA candidate's extremism may save Charlie Crist's district for the Dems — even after it was redrawn by DeSantis

A pivotal Congressional district in central Florida – vacated by Rep. Charlie Crist in his challenge to Gov. Ron DeSantis – might not flip Republican as expected thanks to the Republican candidate’s extreme views.

Recent polling shows Florida’s 13th House district race tied at 47 percent between Democrat Eric Lynn and Republican Anna Paulina Luna. And Luna is the target of the Progress Pinellas Super PAC, which is funded with more than $5 million in donations from Chicago billionaire Justin Ishbia, Florida Politics reports.

GOP again deploys task force to challenge ballots in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — As mail-in ballots start to come in and early voting begins, Republicans in Central Florida are taking advantage of the new election law to challenge mail-in ballots as the number of partisan poll watchers also has increased, according to Central Florida election officials. This year is the first statewide election season since two new laws were passed by Republican lawmakers and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis despite their praise of how smoothly the 2020 vote went in Florida. The changes drastically reduced the use of drop boxes, imposed limits on dropping off ballots and require...

Crist pummels DeSantis’ ‘culture war’ policies during governor’s race debate

Democrat Charlie Crist used the occasion of his only scheduled debate with Gov. Ron DeSantis Monday evening to pummel the Republican governor over his restrictions on abortion rights, for ignoring science when writing COVID and transgender policy, for sidestepping 82,000 COVID deaths in Florida, and for refusing to commit to serving a full second term.

DeSantis, looking alternatively ill at ease and pugnacious during the one-hour contest, fired back, accusing former U.S. Rep. Crist of being soft on crime and immigration enforcement. He insisted that his COVID policies preserved Florida’s economy, boosted parents’ rights, and touted school testing results, though the latest national data Monday showed 4th and 8th graders were unable to reach proficiency in math and reading.

Meanwhile, the audience gathered in Fort Pierce’s Sunrise Theatre proved as much a participant as either candidate, cheering their own team while jeering at the opposition. “Liar!” somebody yelled during DeSantis’ closing remarks.

DeSantis' increasing popularity has Trump scared: op-ed

With weeks left to go until the midterms, Donald Trump is apparently trying to start a fight with one of his potential opponents if he decides to run in 2024.

As CNN's Chris Cillizza points out, the trouble started when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recorded a robocall for Republican nominee for US Senate in Colorado, Joe O’Dea, prompting Trump to slam DeSantis' move as a "BIG MISTAKE" -- likely due to the fact that O'Dea previously told CNN that he did not think Trump should run for the White House again in 2024.

Former GOP strategist: Nearly all Republican politicians are 'complicit' and 'an existential threat to our Democracy'

In his new book, Why We Did It: A Travelogue from the Republican Road to Hell, former GOP strategist Tim Miller gives us his autopsy on why so many “normal” people went along with the Trumpist excesses that now threaten our Democratic system.

His bona fides include serving on former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s 2016 presidential campaign as communications director and as the Republican National Committee’s spokesman for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. Now he’s an Independent voter, an MSNBC political analyst, writer-at-large at The Bulwark, and host of Snapchat’s Not My Party. Miller lives in Oakland, Calif., with his husband, Tyler, and their daughter.

DeSantis-backed book-banning panel is becoming a 'slow-moving trainwreck': report

On Monday, The Daily Beast reported that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration has quietly set up a council, known as a "parent workgroup," that will ban or censor books and "train" teachers and librarians in the rules about what content is and isn't allowed — and that DeSantis' education officials have staffed this group with far-right, anti-gay and anti-mask activists.

"The council was ... staffed under suspicious circumstances, with the state Education Department ignoring its own call for official candidates from local school districts and instead filling most of the slots with right-wing activists who have a history of proposing book bans," reported Brooke Leigh Howard and Jose Pagliery. "One was even nominated by a religious activist with close ties to the DeSantis administration a week before the department publicly called for candidates, according to government emails, hinting at secret coordination between them."

Duped by DeSantis in Texas, he came to Florida for Ian cleanup — but was foiled again

MIAMI — Pedro Escalona endured a grueling journey from Venezuela to Texas, made a brief stopover at a San Antonio migrant center, crossed paths with an operative of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — one who promised a free charter flight to Delaware — then learned the flight had been scuttled and caught a plane to New York City, where he ended up in a homeless shelter. And now, days later, he sat forlornly on a bench in Doral, Florida, outside a Best Western, contemplating life’s odd twists. The company he had been working for had fired him, kicking him and three others out of the hotel room they ha...
