'He wants to take my First Amendment rights': Trump attacks Jack Smith as prosecutor seeks gag order

Donald Trump on Friday night said that president Joe Biden and his "radical left thugs" are prosecuting him because he's leading in the 2024 election, and that "deranged Jack Smith" is trying to take away his First Amendment rights.

Trump, who earlier in the day lashed out at Smith in a post on Truth Social, was speaking at a Pray Vote Stand Summit when he called out Smith by name. Earlier in the day, it was revealed Smith had sought a "narrow" gag order against Trump to protect those involved in the trial.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States expects to announce additional aid to Ukraine next week, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Friday, while announcing President Joe Biden would host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Thursday at the White House. Zelenskiy is expected to meet with congressional leaders from both political parties while he is in Washington, Sullivan said. Reuters, citing three U.S. officials, reported on Monday that the U.S. is considering shipping Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) that can fly up to 190 miles (300 km), or Guided Multiple Launch ...

Trump codefendant won't be suspended from Georgia senate despite charges: report

A three-member panel decided against suspending Georgia state Sen. Shawn Still, who has been charged in the Fulton County election racketeering case for falsely signing a document declaring himself an elector, reported The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday.

"Gov. Brian Kemp’s office said the decision by the review panel — which included Attorney General Carr, House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch — ends the inquiry into whether Still can serve in the Georgia Senate. The three panelists, along with Still, are all Republicans," reported Greg Bluestein. "Still is one of 19 defendants — including Trump — in the indictment brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis that alleges the former president led an illegal scheme to reverse Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia."

House GOP 'hostage-taking' condemned as shutdown nears

A coalition of nearly 90 progressive groups and labor organizations condemned U.S. House Republicans on Friday for threatening a destructive government shutdown as they push for steep and unpopular cuts to education, healthcare, food aid, and environmental protection programs.

"We urge Congress to quickly pass appropriations bills—at least at the spending levels agreed upon in the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023—and to refuse to entertain legislation that guts critical programs so many Americans rely on," the ProsperUS coalition wrote in a letter to Republican and Democratic congressional leaders.

This Trump-appointed 'Federalist Society darling' is pushing for a Supreme Court seat

During the 1990s, critics of Justice Clarence Thomas and the late Justice Antonin Scalia often described them as the U.S. Supreme Court's far-right fringe. But in 2023, the High Court is way to the right of where it was 30 years ago. And two-thirds of the Court consists of GOP-appointed justices.

Nonetheless, members of the Federalist Society would like to see the High Court move even more to the right.

Balance of power at stake as judge sets pre-Thanksgiving timeline for Georgia redistricting ruling

This article is part of U.S. Democracy Day, a nationwide collaborative on Sept. 15, the International Day of Democracy, in which news organizations cover how democracy works and the threats it faces. To learn more, visit usdemocracyday.org.

For nearly two weeks, lawyers in a 19th floor courtroom in downtown Atlanta have examined Georgia’s shifting demographics, pored over socio-economic data and scrutinized the boundary lines of the state’s congressional and legislative districts.

And now the question of whether Georgia’s GOP-drawn political maps illegally dilute Black voting strength is in the hands of federal Judge Steve Jones, who told both sides they could expect a ruling by Thanksgiving.

Frantic push to 'Trump-proof' government is just a 'speed bump' if MAGA returns to White House: report

President Joe Biden is taking steps to prevent Donald Trump from remaking the federal workforce should he recapture the White House, according to a report.

The president quickly canceled an executive order upon taking office that would have allowed Trump to fire tens of thousands of federal workers and install loyalists throughout the government, and the White House proposed a rule Friday that would make it more difficult to reimpose that order, reported the New York Times.

MAGA movement building a system where GOP 'dissenters fear for their lives': analysis

Retiring Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) revealed to journalist McKay Coppins that one Republican lawmaker confided to him that he wanted to vote to impeach former President Donald Trump but feared doing so due to threats to his family.

A news analysis written by Vice News' Todd Zwillich argues that this kind of intimidation is entirely how Trump's "MAGA" movement has been designed to operate.

Rural Georgia voters are now demanding answers in Trump election indictment: report

Georgia was once considered a textbook example of a deep red southern state, but these days, it is a complex, nuanced swing state that reelected a conservative non-MAGA Republican governor (Brian Kemp) and a liberal Democratic U.S. senator (Raphael Warnock) in the 2022 midterms. Former President Donald Trump won Georgia in 2016 but lost it to now-President Joe Biden in 2020, and Democratic strategists consider Georgia a must-win for Biden in 2024.

Fulton County, Georgia is where Trump and 18 of his allies are facing criminal charges over their efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. And Coffee County — a rural county about 200 miles away — plays an important role in the case. Former Coffee County GOP Chair Cathy Latham and ex-Coffee County Elections Director Misty Hampton are both included in the indictment.

GOP wary of making James Comer the face of their impeachment inquiry

House Republicans are wary of making Rep. James Comer (R-KY) the frontman for their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

The House Oversight Committee chairman has been leading the probes of the president and his son Hunter Biden, and while his GOP colleagues have praised the Kentucky lawmaker for digging up fresh evidence in those probes, some Republicans are disappointed by his slipshod messaging, reported Axios.

Clinging to Trumpian lies, Wisconsin GOP tries to 'illegally fire' election chief

Democratic Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul on Thursday swiftly filed a lawsuit after Republican senators attempted to oust the state's top election official, Meagan Wolfe, despite arguments that they lacked authority to do so.

The Wisconsin Senate's 22-11 party-line vote on Wolfe was "a bid to give election deniers and conspiracy theorists more control over how elections are run in the state," explained Mother Jones national voting rights correspondent Ari Berman.

Republican infighting reveals 'radical tactic' for GOP to replace its ranks

No one will mistake Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colorado), a member of the House Freedom Caucus and the Tea Party, for a liberal or a progressive. But even though he is hard-right ideologically, Buck has drawn the wrath of MAGA Republicans by opposing Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-California) push for an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden and arguing that Republicans simply don't have enough evidence.

In an opinion column published on September 14, MSNBC's Steve Benen emphasizes that Buck's clash with other House Republicans speaks to a broader problem within the GOP.
