The leader of the Constitutional Sheriff and Peace Officers Association compared his support of former President Donald Trump to civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a recent event, Smokey Mountain News Kyle Perrotti reports.

"CSPOA is a law enforcement association that operates on the tenet that the sheriff is the highest authority in any county and has the right, even the duty, to reject any perceived intrusion by federal entities," Perrotti notes. "This has recently manifested in the group’s strong election denial and belief in COVID-19 conspiracy theories; at the event, several speakers and attendees swore noncompliance with any future mask or vaccine mandates and expressed total distrust of all public health organizations."

Notes written by an IRS agent who gave evidence against Hunter Biden state that the U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who is handling the case, admitted he was not free to make decisions on how the investigation was handled, according to a report.

Politico obtained the notes which were handwritten by agent Gary Shapley during an Oct. 7, 2022, meeting between the FBI and the IRS. The notes were later submitted to the House Judiciary Committee that has been investigating President Joe Biden's son – and to which Shapley gave evidence that claimed the probe into the president's son on a tax evasion case was downplayed.

Utah GOP Senator and former presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced this Wednesday that he will not seek a second term in the Senate, The Washington Post reported.

In an interview, Romney said it's time for a new generation to “step up” and “shape the world they’re going to live in.”

Republicans in the House of Representatives need to pass a package to fund the American military this month -- but Politico's Playbook reports that they're on the verge of blowing it.

According to Playbook, the proposed $826 billion Pentagon funding bill – which was already seen as dead-on-arrival in the Democratic Senate given its right-wing culture-war provisions related to abortion – has already become "collateral damage" thanks to hardliners in the conference insisting on even deeper spending cuts to the federal budget in exchange for their votes.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) furiously tried to evade questions Wednesday about why no House vote will be held on whether President Joe Biden should be impeached – despite him saying just 12 days earlier that no impeachment could happen without one.

CNN's Manu Raju grilled McCarthy about an interview the speaker had with Breitbart News that was published on September 1 in which McCarthy said, "If we move forward with an impeachment inquiry, it would occur through a vote on the floor of the People’s House and not through a declaration by one person."

"The View" began Wednesday with a video of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) demanding Speaker Kevin McCarthy review their "deal" from January – when McCarthy scrambled to secure enough votes to win the gavel – and threatening to remove him if he doesn't meet that agreement.

"They finally announced it," Whoopi Goldberg said of Tuesday's announcement from McCarthy that an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden would be launched. "And I say, listen, you had seven years after [Hunter Biden] and we see how that went. So, go ahead. So, do whatever you have to do and when you get all the stuff you think you got, come to us and let us know. I want to see. See, because we took our time and made sure we had our ducks in a row. So, I want to see the same thing."

Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has spent months investigating Hunter Biden, but has yet to subpoena President Joe Biden's son to testify on his own behalf before Congress.

Comer was pressed about this during an interview on the right-wing news network Newsmax, when he was simply asked why he wouldn't compel Biden to testify.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Wednesday morning spent time justifying an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden to members of his conference, although sources tell Politico's Olivia Beavers that he presented no new evidence against the president.

"Speaker McCarthy in conference ticking through what House Rs say they have found on Hunter Biden," reported Beavers on her Twitter account. “'Hyping' it up as one source put it... Nothing new, they said. Talking about shell companies, etc, that we have heard from House GoP oversight."

Election officials, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, told lawmakers Tuesday about death threats and other vitriol they have faced while operating elections, ahead of what they believe will be another contentious election cycle in 2024.

They spoke at the House Elections Committee hearing in support of bills that would define intimidating or preventing an election official from performing their job as a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
