Serena’s sendoff gives way to second week of U.S. Open

By Jon Wertheim Williams’s thrilling three-round run captivated the sports world in the first week of the U.S. Open, but intrigue remains entering the tournament’s second half. The Serena Open is over. Allegedly. And what a five-day event it was. A sendoff befitting a regal and unrivaled player. High production value. High celebrity quotient. High prices. High ratings. High quality tennis—so much so that the featured performer has left open the door (if ever so slightly) to continuing. She didn’t add to her haul of Majors—“23 and Me” endorsement?—but represented herself (and tennis) brilliantl...

Trump has no 'innocent explanation' or 'we would have heard it by now': Ex-US Attorney

Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of Pennsylvania voters in support of Mehmet Oz, on Saturday where he railed against the Justice Department and the FBI for enforcing laws about stolen government documents and classified information. Instead of providing an excuse for why he had stolen government property and top secret information, including nuclear documents, Trump claimed they raided his wife's underwear drawer and his son's bedroom.

Former US Attorney and University of Michigan Law School Professor Barbara McQuade explained that there's no excuse for Trump's behavior because he has yet to provide one.

'That's lunacy': MSNBC's Rick Tyler shutdown after claiming Biden and Trump are 'both sides of the same coin'

Republican pundit Rick Tyler was shot down on MSNBC Sunday after claiming that Donald Trump's speech in Pennsylvania on Saturday was the same as President Joe Biden's pitch for Americans to help save democracy.

Biden spoke out on Thursday, saying that the MAGA philosophy is an attempt to eliminate the votes of Americans, the attempt to restrict the votes of Americans and the attempt to obliterate the liberty and freedoms of Americans. Over and over in his speech, he talked about his work with Republicans and long-time friendship with patriotic Republicans who continue to believe in the Constitution and the rule of law.

MAGA voter is angry over Dr. Oz abandoning Trump after the Republican primary

Donald Trump isn't on the ballot but he's giving his ranting rallies around the country for the next several months before the 2022 election as Trumpism appears before midterm voters.

Some Republicans don't want anything to do with Trump, as they pivot to appeal to a broader general election voting bloc. Washington Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley is among those GOP candidates who were caught off-guard when asked about Trump. Refusing him would turn them into a target. Bringing him into their campaign would destroy their chances of pulling over mainstream voters.

'This is not who we are': Biden says Trump and the MAGA Republicans are a threat — and calls on Americans to help

President Joe Biden started his speech talking about the founding of America at Independence Hall, where the Constitution was debated and written.

"But Biden warned that Americans can no longer afford to pretend that democracy isn't under assault. We the people have the flame of liberty that is burning inside of us that began at this hall," he said, adding that Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans are an extremist sect that is putting the U.S. in danger. He explained that he's worked with Republicans and they, the majority of Republicans, are not MAGA Republicans.

Watch: Biden addresses extremist fanaticism endangering the nation

The right-wing fringe will be a focus of President Joe Biden's speech on Thursday, but the message is going to be an optimistic tone, deputy chief of staff Jen O'Malley Dillon told MSNBC.

Earlier this week, Biden spoke about extremist MAGA Republicans he said are endangering the United States, a fact that the FBI director has confirmed in testimony to Congress. Polls show that a considerable portion of Americans (40 percent) fear that there will be a civil war within the next decade.

After a little over 90 minutes in a closed courtroom, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen M. Cannon refused to issue an opinion in court on whether or not Donald Trump will get a special master to review the documents he stole from the White House for any attorney/client privilege.

Will Brian Kemp even have a lt. governor if he wins reelection in Georgia?

Bulwark columnist Amanda Carpenter wrote Thursday that there might a problem with Gov. Brian Kemp's candidacy in the November reelection campaign: his lieutenant governor could be too busy in court.

It appears Kemp's running-mate, Burt Jones, was a fake elector, which has fallen under a federal investigation from the Justice Department. Jones and other Republicans signed their names to a fraudulent document claiming to be lawfully elected electors and the signatures were sent to Washington.

'That’s the ball game': Former prosecutor shoots down Trump’s latest claim of executive privilege

Donald Trump has vacillated between attorney/client privilege to executive privilege and at times he merely says "privilege" as the justification that the FBI shouldn't have access to the government documents he retained when he left the White House.

Former Justice Department lawyer Harry Litman explained that Trump's recent rant of executive privilege makes it clear that the game is over. At the same time, none of the information that was revealed by the recent Justice Department response would have been available without Trump's demand for the special master. Over and over, Trump appears to miscalculate and the Justice Department appears to be several steps ahead of him.
