Pandagon

Ch-ch-changes.....

After many years and many server changes and finally landing here at Raw Story, which has taken very good care of us, it's time to say goodbye to Pandagon. I've been blogging under this banner for ten years, after Jesse Taylor asked me to join. He, in turn, had been running this joint since he was in college. A lot has changed since then. I became a journalist, moved from Austin to New York and learned to play Dungeons & Dragons. Jesse became a lawyer and, just this past weekend, a married man.

Carly Fiorina defends her lie with a whole bunch of lies

I do like it when Republican candidates sport a resume full of corporate executive work, because it really shows the public how many fools and idiots coast into that position not on merit but on their bullshitting abilities. Donald Trump, Herman Cain, and now we have Carly Fiorina, who just can't understand why her perceived underlings (voters, journalists) won't scurry away, pretending to accept her bullshit like former employees of hers had to do, lest they lost their jobs.

Marco Rubio has an astoundingly low opinion of women's intelligence

At RH Reality Check, I covered this story that I wish was getting more press, about how Marco Rubio goes back and forth between suggesting that women who get abortions are greedy monsters who get pregnant for cash:

It would be great if sex robots would take misogynists off the dating market, but it will never happen

Oh man, the misogynist internet never stops being a fascinating font of wrong-headedness. The latest memorable dive into painful stupidity comes to us from David Futrelle and the folks at the Blue Pill: The incredibly depressing ladies auxiliary of the Red Pill (a subreddit dedicated to spinning out misogynist bullshit under the pretense of "pick-up") has a thread where they talk about how they see The Stepford Wives---both the movie and the book---as a morality play about why women should act like submissive sexbots of the sort the "wives" in the story actually are.

How anti-choicers talked themselves out of recognizing the humanity of actual people

Did you know Rosa Parks was a board member for Planned Parenthood? Which, according to the Republican presidential candidates from Wednesday night, means that she was a supporter of  "heartlessly bartering and selling the body parts of human beings" (Ted Cruz, who wants this supposed baby-killer on the $10 bill) and that she believed "in the systematic murder of children in the womb to preserve their body parts" (Chris Christie). Just as a reminder of how ludicrous things have become.

Some women for Republicans to consider putting on the $10 bill

Oh dear, the answers to the question of what woman you would put on the $10 bill during last night's debate. While some candidates wisely decided to provide an answer that was in the spirit of the question, by naming an American woman of historical importance (Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton), as Ben Mathis-Lilley of Slate points out, a whopping 45 percent of the Republican answers were not American women of historical importance. I realized the anti-feminist base has the party, pardon the expression, by the balls, but are they that afraid to admit that any American woman ever did anything of historical importance? Can't admit that, the wives might start asking for more date nights? What the fuck?

The continuing Republican war on gynecology

If you've been following the defunding efforts aimed at Planned Parenthood, it becomes quickly and abundantly clear that despite all the handwaving about "fetal body parts", the real goal is to cut women off, especially poor women, from health care that makes it possible to have a healthy sex life. But of course, Republicans are trying to hide that. The ideology behind this drive, which holds that no one should have sex before marriage and only for procreation after, is wildly unpopular. But man, the efforts at pretending that this is about anything but destroying access to sexual health care are paper thin.

The weird, woolly and now dangerous fantasy world of online misogynists

David Futrelle of We Hunted the Mammoth alerts me to the fact that some drunk MRAs recorded their bizarre sexual fantasies about myself and Jessica Valenti and, for some reason, felt it appropriate to put it on the internet:

What's with Christian conservatives and the Dred Scott decision? An explainer.

Fundamentalists like Mike Huckabee love name-dropping Dred Scott v Sanford every chance they get, so you'd think that they'd actually bother to learn something about it before spouting off, but no.

People are not being pointlessly mean to that Victorian couple

Well, I suppose this was inevitable. After a day of people making fun of this woman who explained on Vox how she and her husband "live" like they are in 1880, now we've got the "stop being mean and making fun of people" backlash. For those who haven't followed the story, Sarah Chrisman wrote a piece about how she and her husband Gabriel have convinced themselves that they are somehow reliving the 1880s because they dress funny and refuse to use electric lights. It was bourgeois delusion at its utter finest and of course the internet, including myself, had to make just so much fun of them. For one thing, they seemed to think that living in an era is about little more than using their gadgets and dressing like them. For another thing, there was a certain self-satisfaction about how they are better than all you modern people with your phones and TVs that was, no matter how gently stated, judgmental, and so people's reactions were understandable self-defense.

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis belongs in jail

So Kim Davis, the county clerk who was blocking gay couples from getting marriage licenses at her Kentucky offices, has been held in contempt and jailed until she comes to her senses and resigns or starts issuing the licenses. Immediately my social media blew up with a bunch of worrywart liberals who think this is the worst thing and it's going to backfire by turning her in a martyr, etc. etc. These people are way overthinking this and are completely wrong. Davis needs to be in jail and these are the reasons why.
