'Jury selection process is rigged in favor of white supremacy' -- despite Ahmaud Arbery and Charlottesville results: report

Two recent high-profile verdicts that went against white defendants were "extraordinary cases" that don't represent the day-to-day reality that the judicial system perpetuates white supremacy, a report at Truthout laid out Friday.

In both the conviction of three men for murdering Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and the civil suit holding white supremacists liable for the deadly 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in 2017, jury-selection processes were skewed to whites.

Ahmaud Arbery's killers may have been doomed by their own words

The video of Ahmaud Arbery’s shotgun death was a shocking piece of evidence that suddenly brought the Black man’s killing into the national consciousness. But the murder convictions of the three white men who chased him may have been secured as much by their own words to investigators the day of the shooting. Greg McMichael, who was in the bed of a pickup truck when his son killed Arbery, told police the Black man “was trapped like a rat” and he told Arbery: “Stop, or I’ll blow your f---ing head off!” Statements like that allowed prosecutors to give context to the short video that didn’t show ...

On the one hand, more states are allowing Americans to carry weapons in public without permits, and the gun-rights movement could be on the verge of a major Supreme Court victory. On the other, the National Rifle Association, which advocates on behalf of gun owners, faces an existential crisis that's mostly due to the NRA's own missteps.
