'Do you have the votes?' Fox News stumps Kevin McCarthy on his 'wacko' debt ceiling bill

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) could not say if he had the votes to pass a bill raising the debt ceiling while enacting massive spending cuts and forcing Medicaid recipients to work for health care.

Fox News host Shannon Bream suggested that former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) would struggle to defeat former President Donald Trump because he is lagging in the polls.

AOC blasts Justice Alito 'tantrum'

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito of throwing a 'tantrum' in his written dissent to Friday night's ruling over the abortion medication mifepristone and said the Court's right-wing majority has become an ideological political force that must be checked by the two other branches of government.

Backed only by Justice Clarence Thomas, Alito's dissent evoked the charge that President Joe Biden may not have honored a ruling by the court that was unfavorable to the administration's position. As it was, an unknown majority on the Court decided to maintain availability of the widely-used medication, a relief—even if temporary—for reproductive rights defenders nationwide.

After one legal expert called the portion of Alito's dissent challenging the hypothetical actions of Biden "unwarranted and completely unbefitting a Supreme Court Justice," Ocasio-Cortez chimed in to say that the administration, had it been necessary, would have been right to have the FDA ignore a Court ruling that barred access to a legitimately approved drug used safely by millions each year.

How two conflicting federal court decisions led to the Supreme Court’s abortion pill ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling on April 21, 2023, that allows continued access to the abortion pill mifepristone in states where abortion is legal.

The court’s decision, which included few details and only indicated that Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito did not concur, follows a whirlwind legal process about whether people should be able to purchase mifepristone, one of two drugs used in a two-dose series for inducing a medical abortion.

Dominion never intended to save democracy with its lawsuit: report

Dominion Voting Systems "was probably always going to settle" its massive defamation case against Fox News, and any talk of holding the media company accountable for its lies was likely a negotiating tactic to score the settlement, according to Slate writers who spoke about the issue on the outlet's podcast.

Dominion and Fox surprised almost everyone when they settled in the eleventh-hour before a trial that would have been seen around the world. This was in part attributed to a "secret mediator" who was making phone calls from a boat and a hotel.

Giving away the game: Matt Gaetz says Kevin McCarthy 'picked up' far-right's debt ceiling plan

Far-right House Republicans are reportedly "thrilled" with the debt ceiling legislation that Speaker Kevin McCarthy unveiled earlier this week.

That's likely because, according to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), McCarthy (R-Calif.) simply "picked up the House Freedom Caucus plan and helped us convert it into legislative text."

"And it shows," replied the progressive watchdog group Accountable.US.

Supreme Court decision is 'tactical' — and has nothing to do with the law: former Christian conservative

The Supreme Court's decision to allow the so-called abortion pill to remain on the market for now may be merely "tactical," according to a former conservative Christian Republican.

Frank Schaeffer told Joy Reid of MSNBC's The ReidOut on Friday that his father, Francis Schaefer, "was really the grandfather of the whole anti-abortion movement in terms of evangelicals that morphed into the Christian nationalist movement that has taken over the Republican party." This is the same Schaeffer who told Raw Story in 2009 he had concerns about the radicalization of the Christian right, and the increasingly violent rhetoric he foresaw turning into actual violence.
