'Learn how sarcasm works': Marjorie Taylor Greene quickly backpedals on 'armed' insurrection

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) confirmed on Monday that she had made remarks about how to plan an "armed" insurrection against the government but insisted that the comments had been a joke.

At a gala for Young Republicans over the weekend, Greene said that Trump supporters would have "won" on Jan. 6 if she and Steve Bannon had planned the attempted insurrection.

Divided Republicans point fingers over midterms disaster at one another — and Donald Trump

With the midterm elections officially over, Republicans are pointing fingers over their disastrous performance — and the divisive role of former President Donald Trump. Herschel Walker’s loss in the closely watched Georgia Senate run off capped a campaign in which the GOP dramatically failed to engineer a sweeping red wave rebuke of President Joe Biden and the Democrats. Republicans across the political spectrum from MAGA loyalists to “Never Trump” conservatives agree that they flopped. But the party is bitterly divided about who should take the blame for the losses and even more deeply split ...

Anti-ACLU group 'making sure white people remain in control' with flurry of lawsuits: report

An organization founded by former Donald Trump speechwriter Stephen Miller successfully challenged one of the most significant pieces of legislation since the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

America First Legal, which positions itself as a conservative answer to the ACLU, successfully challenged a provision in President Joe Biden's pandemic stimulus package that would have distributed $4 billion to Black farmers to rectify decades of racist discrimination, and beat back a $29 billion program to assist struggling restaurants owned by women and minorities, reported the Washington Post.

Rail workers: Long bomb trains are endangering the public

The mercury plummeted to 27 below zero while 44 mph winds blasted snow and ice, making the forest all around the tracks invisible. The freight train's power died 78 miles from the nearest village or farmhouse. It was right before the birth of Iowa-based locomotive engineer Jeff Kurtz's son, and he desperately wanted to be with his wife.

Climate change is throwing railway workers into more extreme weather, so blizzards and scalding heat waves are new everyday challenges. Some trains still have wood stoves that can keep a crew from freezing while they await rescue through a scary winter night. But this one didn't.

Florida divests billions from investment firm over QAnon-linked conspiracy theory

On Monday, Mother Jones detailed the QAnon-linked conspiracy theory at the heart of why Florida's chief financial officer just divested billions of dollars from the investment firm BlackRock.

"The firm, Florida chief financial officer Jimmy Patronis alleged, didn’t have its investors’ best interests in mind," reported Kiera Butler. "'Florida’s Treasury Division is divesting from BlackRock because they have openly stated they’ve got other goals than producing returns,' he told Reuters. He was referring to the company’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance principles, a collection of socially responsible investing values widely known by their acronym, ESG."

Kevin McCarthy can't be allowed to serve as House speaker after voting against Biden certification: conservatives

Kevin McCarthy's endorsement of Donald Trump's election lies should disqualify him from serving as House speaker, according to a pair of prominent conservatives.

The California Republican is facing a leadership challenge from his party's right-wing flank, but The Bulwark editor-at-large William Kristol and University of Texas government professor Jeffrey Tulis argued that he should not be allowed to serve after he voted against certifying President Joe Biden's election win.

Momentum to 'replace Sinema' already building after she ditches Dems

While the White House and Democratic congressional leadership are publicly hoping U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's departure from the party won't change much in Washington, D.C., progressives in her home state of Arizona and across the nation are already pushing to replace the newly declared Independent if she runs for reelection in 2024.

The "Primary Sinema" campaign rebranded on Saturday as "Replace Sinema" following the senator's Friday announcement—which came just days after Democrats secured 51 seats in the Senate with Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) winning his second crucial runoff in as many years.

The Change for Arizona 2024 PAC project was launched in September "to educate the public about the ways Kyrsten Sinema has let down Arizonans and caved to special interests," said the campaign, which has raised over $500,000 from thousands of grassroots donors. "Now, as Kyrsten Sinema has left the Democratic Party, the group's effort will shift toward defeating her in a potential three-way general election and replacing her with a real Democrat."

Russia wanted to swap Paul Whelan for 'assassin' held in Germany

Washington (AFP) - US efforts to negotiate the freedom of a former Marine held in Russia as part of the swap involving basketball star Brittney Griner were thwarted by Moscow's demand for the release of a convicted murderer held in Germany, according to a top US official and media reports.

The swap of Griner for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout raised questions as to why the US side had failed to secure the simultaneous release of Paul Whelan, a former Marine accused by Moscow of spying -- a charge Washington flatly rejects.

The timeline of Jared Kushner's corruption is everything: biographer

Intercept reporter Ryan Grim told MSNBC on Sunday that the one thing he uncovered speaking to the Qataris about Jared Kushner was that if they knew Kushner would guarantee that they were punished by a years-long blockade that they would have bought Kushner's property a lot sooner.

Kushner Companies negotiated a bailout deal for 666 Fifth Avenue with the Qatari sovereign wealth fund. The moment came months after the Qatari government officials were staying in the Trump hotel in Washington on the same date as Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, who had a home in Washington at the time.
