GOP insiders increasingly fear 2024 primaries 'could end up bloody': Politico

Republicans are increasingly afraid that the right-wing Club for Growth is a liability to their path to retaking the Senate in 2024, reported POLITICO on Tuesday.

"The conservative anti-tax group is once again at the center of an intraparty collision course. This time, it’s going up against two of the most powerful people in the GOP — the former president and the Senate minority leader — right as the party is struggling to fix its electability problems and with control of the upper chamber on the line," reported Ally Mutnick, who wrote that the Club injecting itself into the race has raised fears that "a primary that was already destined to be brutal could end up bloody."

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has threatened to build a prison next to Disney World after a disagreement over the state's "Don't Say Gay" law.

At a press conference on Monday, DeSantis announced that Republicans in the legislature would introduce a bill to circumvent a last-minute effort for Disney to maintain control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District where it is located. The governor has fought to remove Disney's self-governance after the company came out against a "Don't Say Gay" bill that critics said could marginalize LGBTQ+ people.

GOP is 'never going back' from Trump and party's future 'isn’t likely to be pretty': pollster

Pollster Sarah Longwell has a dire message for Republicans who insist the party is ready to "move on" from former President Donald Trump.

Writing in The Bulwark, the anti-Trump strategist says that conversations she's had with GOP base voters have shown no appetite for going back to the way the party was before Trump's 2016 election campaign, and she noted that even Trump imitators such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are having trouble convincing the GOP base of their bonafides.

'I'm tough on crime': Trump and DeSantis duke it out over pro-death penalty stance

When it comes to the death penalty, the United States is out of step with many of its allies. A long list of countries in the European Union (EU) have long since abolished capital punishment, from Italy to Sweden to the Republic of Ireland — as have the United States' neighbors to the north (Canada) and south (Mexico). Australia hasn't had an execution since 1967, and in 2010, the Australian Commonwealth Parliament voted to prohibit any state from reintroducing the death penalty.

Yet in the U.S., some far-right MAGA Republicans not only want to see the death penalty used more often — they want to expand it to include crimes other than murder. Two of them are former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who appears to be gearing up for a 2024 presidential run even though he has yet to make a formal announcement.

Revealed: Nearly $500 million continues to sit in a bloated, unused government fund

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to include additional information from Common Cause.

As Americans rush to file their taxes by this year’s April 18 deadline, a sliver of them — less than 4 percent, if recent history holds — will check a little box that directs $3 to the Presidential Election Campaign Fund.

But that’s still millions of $3 contributions, year after year. And they’ve caused the Presidential Election Campaign Fund — a once-popular resource for White House aspirants that hasn’t been used regularly in 15 years — to swell past $430 million in value as of February 28, according to U.S. Treasury records reviewed by Raw Story.

With the untapped fund likely to continue growing after Tax Day en route to half a billion dollars, politicians and nonprofits have ideas for how to reform the nation’s obsolete public campaign financing policies and reallocate this resource at a time when, according to the Treasury, the country is facing more than a $1 trillion dollar deficit.

As he weighs presidential run, Miami mayor avoids taking positions on DeSantis’ policies

MIAMI — Miami Mayor Francis Suarez may be considering a run for president, but he’s not ready to share some of his policy stances yet. As the Republican-led Florida Legislature passes laws that loosen gun regulations and considers laws that transform public education, Suarez preferred to stay out of the conversation in a recent interview with the Miami Herald. When it comes to significant parts of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ agenda, the mayor did not offer his view. “Things are changing rapidly,” said Suarez, a registered Republican currently holding a nonpartisan office. “And I focus on the things tha...
