DeSantis exerts 'absolute control' over Florida statehouse to deliver conservative wish list

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is engineering months of positive media coverage ahead of his possible presidential run with a push by the state legislature to pass a conservative wish list.

The state legislative session begins Tuesday, and Florida lawmakers are preparing to advance a slate of bills DeSantis wants passed including requiring laws that would let private companies check employees' immigration status, limit lawsuits against businesses, end permit requirements for concealed weapons and other issues that could boost his stock among conservatives, reported the Miami Herald.

Kari Lake trashed by Reagan's conservative son: 'My father would be embarrassed'

Any hope that Kari Lake might have had that she could pick up the flag of the Reagan Revolution as she tries to keep her political aspirations alive was likely crushed by the conservative icon's son prior to her appearance at CPAC.

Lake was one of the Republicans who did appear at the sparsely-attended conference in Maryland that higher-profile conservatives like Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) avoided.

After a knock on O.J. Simpson for having special insight into the Alex Murdaugh trial, HBO host John Oliver turned to his main story, which was Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and his tragic life as a melting snowflake in sunny Florida.

He began with the new ad that DeSantis is promoting, claiming that Florida is "proof that we're not destined for failure."

Former aides: DeSantis can’t win over Trump supporters — here’s why

Two former top aides to Donald Trump's White House revealed Sunday that they don't believe Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has what it takes to beat the former president for the Republican presidential nomination — and that it will largely come down to personality.

"I'm definitely worried about how strong" DeSantis will be in a campaign battle against the former president, Stephanie Grisham, former press secretary in the Trump administration, told Jim Acosta on CNN.

Comedians reveal 'waning support for Donald Trump' at CPAC

The "Good Liars" comedy troupe was on hand at CPAC over the weekend to ask participants about Jan. 6 and the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election.

"I think he literally said very clearly, be peaceful," said one woman saying Donald Trump had no responsibility for Jan. 6.

'Horrible result for Donald Trump' in the CPAC straw poll: GOP campaign adviser

According to one campaign consultant with a history of working with Republican candidates, Donald Trump should be alarmed by the final results of the 2023 CPAC straw poll that he won late Saturday night.

Appearing on MSNBC's "The Alex Witt Show," Susan Del Percio noted this year's CPAC gathering was poorly attended but overwhelmingly filled with supporters of the former president who gave the keynote address.

'Wild west of litigation': Buckle up as Florida legislature pushes sweeping changes to legal system

Shortly after a state House committee last month OK’d sweeping changes to the state’s litigation process, Speaker Paul Renner gathered a powerful array of business and insurance representatives in the Capitol’s Fourth Floor rotunda for a news conference.

They all agreed that, in making it harder to sue insurance companies, the legislation would reduce frivolous lawsuits and thereby protect businesses and everyday Floridians. At least that’s what certain GOP lawmakers and lobbyists believe.

One of those everyday Floridians, amid dozens who’d come to Tallahassee to oppose the bill, was watching the lobbyists speak that day in late February. His name is Gary Miracle, and he’s a former salesman who’d suffered amputation of all four of his extremities following a medical crisis, rendering him unable to perform basic life functions, much less hold a job.

'A roadmap to his defeat': DeSantis' new book unwittingly hands opponents plenty of ammo

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' new book, presumably released now because he intends to run for the Republican Party's 2024 presidential nomination may come back to haunt him in both the GOP primary and the general election should he get past Donald Trump.

According to an analysis by MSNBC Opinion Editor James Downie, DeSantis' book, which Downie described as having "the depressingly generic title 'The Courage to Be Free,'" exposes many of the Florida governor's weaknesses which can be used against him in a bruising presidential campaign.

'If it’s not Trump, I won’t vote': CPAC exposes schism as attendees rip into 'traitor' DeSantis

If the 2023 CPAC gathering proved anything, other than the damage sexual assault allegations against founder Matt Schlapp may have done to attendance, it is that there is a deep schism among conservatives as to who they want to be the face of the Republican Party going forward.

In interviews with the mostly pro-Donald Trump conservatives who showed up at what the Guardian's David Smith called a "sparsely-attended" conservative gathering, there were more than a few who are off the Trump train and want Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to be their man on the 2024 presidential ballot.

'Their worst nightmare': Trump plots White House return — but worries about 'very dangerous' U.S. election system

The former presidents of Brazil and the United States took the stage at CPAC on Saturday where both fascist politicians continued to sow doubt about their respective electoral defeats as they received standing ovations from the annual convention's far-right attendees.

Brazil's disgraced former leader Jair Bolsonaro—whose supporters stormed government offices in January after his successor, leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was sworn into office—was brought onto the stage this year's "diminished" CPAC gathering to blaring rock music and loud cheers from the crowd.

Addressing the American audience, Bolsonaro indicated once more his doubts that he lost the Brazilian election fairly, saying, "I had way more support in 2022 than I had in 2018, and I don't understand why the numbers said the opposite."
