Hundreds of Palm Beach County students already in COVID quarantine after just two days

On Thursday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that hundreds of students at Palm Beach County public schools are now in quarantine for COVID-19 — just two days after the schools opened for the year.

"Interim School District Superintendent Michael Burke said on MSNBC on Thursday afternoon that in addition to the 440 in quarantine, 5,700 of the district's estimated 179,000 students have opted out of the school district's mask mandate. Palm Beach County is home to the 10th largest school district in the U.S.," reported Austen Erblat. "Burke called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to look at current policies and make changes in the interest of students. 'The governor's got to take responsibility for establishing the ground rules we're operating under.'"

DeSantis admits defeat in threats to cut pay of school leaders who impose mask mandates

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has finally backed down on his threats to punish anyone who implements a mask mandate in schools or communities, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

DeSantis had claimed that he would cut the salaries of superintendents and funding to community schools that mandate students wear masks. Currently, Florida is suffering a massive increase in COVID-19 cases and most parents are desperate to protect their children. His hardened and Trump-like approach to the COVID crisis led his poll numbers to sink and turned his state against him as hospitals climb to capacity.

Matt Gaetz's week just got way worse

The longtime "wingman" of Rep. Matt Gaetz's, R-Fla. is reportedly cooperating with federal prosecutors and has already turned over "thousands" of files that could implicate the Florida congressman as inappropriately engaged with a 17-year-old girl.

Gaetz is reportedly facing a federal investigation into possible sex trafficking of a minor but has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. But his longtime friend and former Florida tax collector Joel Greenberg, who pleaded guilty in May to numerous federal charges including child sex trafficking, has given investigators "thousands" of photos and videos, text messages, access to his social media accounts, and years of Venmo and Cash App transactions as part of his cooperation agreement, according to ABC News. Messages reviewed by ABC News showed that Greenberg met women to pay for sex online and then introduced him to Gaetz and others. Greenberg admitted in his guilty plea that he trafficked a minor and introduced her to other "adult men" who had sex with her when she was underage.

Houston doctor: Greg Abbott is a 'direct threat' to the children of Texas

As the highly contagious Delta variant continues to spread, many hospitals are reporting record numbers of children being hospitalized, especially in areas with low vaccination rates, including Arkansas, Florida, Missouri and Texas. Dr. Christina Propst, a pediatrician in Houston, says children under 12 who are still ineligible for COVID-19 vaccines are at risk. "They are currently our most vulnerable population, just as this highly transmissible variant is surging across the country," Propst says. She says Texas Governor Greg Abbott's order banning mask mandates in schools is a purely political decision that ignores science. "What he is doing is a direct threat to the health and well-being of the children of Texas," says Propst.

Legal experts say latest Trump scandal leaves DOJ ‘no choice’ but to indict the former president

Legal experts are weighing in on Wednesday evening's bombshell report in The New York Times that the U.S. Attorney in Atlanta resigned on January 4 rather than be fired by then-President Donald Trump for refusing to say the election was rigged and there had been massive voter fraud, which Trump had been falsely claiming.

Trump had appointed Byung Pak to be the U.S. Attorney in mid 2017. Hours after top DOJ officials either warned or pressured him – or both – on Jan. 3, that he would be fired, Pak sent his letter of resignation to the President. On Wednesday he told the Senate Judiciary Committee what had happened.

DeSantis policy on masks for schoolchildren might not even be legal

The Florida Constitution seems to make clear who runs local schools: “The school board shall operate, control, and supervise all free public schools within the school district and determine the rate of school district taxes within the limits prescribed herein."

However, Florida's new Parents' Bill of Rights, signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis this year, says the government “may not infringe on the fundamental rights of a parent to direct the upbringing, education, health care, and mental health" of their child.
