Jeffrey Lord calls for Democrats to apologize for slavery -- and gets crushed by Donna Brazile
CNN contributor Jeffrey Lord's attempt to get the last word during a post-debate discussion on Wednesday night was stiffly rebuked by Democratic National Committee vice-chair Donna Brazille, Media Matters reported.
"I'm still waiting for [Hillary] Clinton or any Democrat to get the Democratic Party formally on record apologizing for slavery," Lord said. "I mean, we can start there and go on. So, you know, if they want to get into that, we can get into that too."
The remark by Lord -- a vocal supporter of Donald Trump who tried to link modern Democrats to the Ku Klux Klan last week -- prompted a quizzical look from frequent sparring partner Van Jones. But Brazile stepped in to respond.
"If we want to recall the founders of our country and their failure to understand the humanity of all people, Jeffrey, we could get into that," she said. "But I'm sure there's a larger issue than to go back and get that litigated."
Lord's statement also seemed incongruous, since it came in response to contributor Maria Cardona's observation regarding Lucía Quiej, a Guatemalan immigrant who submitted a question to Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during the debate.
"That was a moment that I think just underscores the huge differences between where the Democrats are on this whole issue of deportation, undocumented immigrants, making sure that they're able to be here, [and] if they haven't committed any criminal acts, to continue to try to live out their American dream, and give them a path to citizenship," Cardona said.
