‘Begging you’: Florida newspaper pleads with DeSantis to ‘save people from suffering’ instead of 'tweeting about pythons'

One of Florida's largest newspapers ripped into Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday for "tweeting about pythons" as the Sunshine State runs out of ICU beds and medical staff amid a record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations.

Noting that DeSantis is a "prolific tweeter," the Orlando Sentinel's editorial board pleaded with the governor to use the platform to encourage people to get vaccinated.

Fox & Friends joins right-wing Regeneron cult: Antibody treatment is ‘basically still getting vaccinated’

"Fox & Friends" has joined the Governor Ron DeSantis movement of promoting Regeneron's highly-experimental COVID-19 antibody therapy as a treatment option instead of the preventative coronavirus vaccine, and is falsely claiming that most people hospitalized with the coronavirus are treated with the drug.

"You know it's interesting," Fox & Friends' Ainsley Earhardt said Wednesday, "Greg Abbott, he's in our prayers this morning because he announced that he tested positive for COVID yesterday. He has been vaccinated and still got COVID," she said, appearing to falsely imply the coronavirus vaccine does not work.

GOP governors are inadvertently fueling a backlash against their own party: report

Although MAGA Republicans spend a lot of time talking about "states' rights," they aren't always big on local rights and will gladly shoot down local laws and ordinances they don't like — whether it has to do with marijuana, taxes, the minimum wage or COVID-19-related restrictions. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for example, have issued executive orders forbidding local school districts from mandating face masks in the classroom. And liberal Washington Post opinion writer Greg Sargent, this week in his column, argues that Abbott and DeSantis are way out of the mainstream.

"With DeSantis and Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott actively thwarting local officials from protecting their constituents with mask mandates," Sargent writes, "a backlash to these antics may be brewing. A new Axios-Ipsos poll probes public sentiments on this in a novel way. It asks respondents about state laws that prohibit local officials from creating mask requirements. Both DeSantis and Abbott have sought to do this, albeit by executive order."

Florida official calls on DeSantis to declare state of emergency: 'Our hospitals and our health care workers are overwhelmed'

Citing new state and federal COVID-19 statistics, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Nikki Fried called on Gov. Ron DeSantis Monday to declare a state of emergency and draw down federal disaster assistance.

In her daily announcements of updated COVID data, Fried said Monday that conditions in Florida are becoming dire, yet DeSantis has shown no interest in issuing emergency orders other than to block local restrictions such as mask-wearing mandates, recommended by the CDC, and vaccine mandates.

DeSantis turns ‘Citrus Bowl’ stadium into site offering COVID antibody treatment – but no vaccines

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, overseeing the worst COVID performance of any state currently, on Monday announced he is turning an 85-year old sports stadium that can seat as many as 65,000 people into a site offering COVID-19 antibody treatment for up to 320 people per day.

Orlando's Camping World Stadium, which has been called the Tangerine Bowl and the Florida Citrus Bowl, will provide space for the treatments – but none for vaccines. In fact, there are no mass vaccination sites currently operating in the Sunshine State, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which says the Florida Republican governor's speech Monday "downplays vaccine effectiveness."

Trump hotels impose mask mandates as Republicans rail against them

At least two of former President Donald Trump's properties have imposed mask mandates, even as GOP governors and Republicans in Congress rail against such requirements.

Politico reported Monday that Trump, who became "an emblem for anti-masking behavior" during his presidency, has remained relatively silent about the issue even as the emergence of the COVID-19 Delta variant has reignited the so-called mask wars this summer. In fact, Trump has signaled opposition to masks or mask mandates in only two of the hundreds of statements he's issued through his Save America PAC since being banned by Twitter, and he recently dodged a question about masks on Fox News.

‘Health care system is really hurting,’ but Florida isn’t under a COVID-19 state of emergency

ORLANDO, Fla. — Despite record hospitalizations, Florida isn’t under a state of emergency as the highly transmissible delta variant sends cases soaring, frustrating one Central Florida emergency manager’s response and tying the hands of other local leaders confronting the new pandemic challenge. Gov. Ron DeSantis declined to reinstate Florida’s emergency declaration, even as the number of people needing to be hospitalized for the virus exceeded previous peaks, and he’s also curtailed the ability of local leaders to craft their own responses. The widespread availability of vaccines and new anti...
