FBI says Donald Trump combined top secret documents with magazines and personal correspondence

Twice-impeached former president Donald Trump mixed personal correspondence and magazines with classified documents, according to the FBI.

The FBI raided his Palm Beach residence Mar-a-Lago on Aug. 8 and found that 14 of the 15 boxes recovered from Trump's home contained multiple classified and top secret documents combined with magazines, personal correspondence and miscellaneous newspapers.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart ordered the Department of Justice to make a redacted version of the affidavit public by Friday. According to the document, FBI agents found that 25 of the 184 documents marked classified at Trump's estate were at top secret.

Most of the affidavit was redacted and the FBI said it was necessary to protect the safety and privacy of a significant number of civilian witnesses as well as law enforcement personnel "to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.”

The 28-page affidavit noted that “evidence, contraband, fruits of crime, or other items illegally possessed” would be found at Mar-a-Lago.

In a May 25, 2022 letter to the Justice Department released along with the affidavit, a lawyer for Trump said classified information may have been "unknowingly included among the boxes brought to Mar-a-Lago by the movers."

The lawyer, M. Evan Corcoran, said Trump had "readily and voluntarily" cooperated with NARA's request that documents be returned and said any investigation should not "involve politics."

Corcoran asserted that a president has the "absolute authority to declassify documents" and the "criminal statute that governs the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or material does not apply to the president."

IN OTHER NEWS: Marjorie Taylor Greene tells President Joe Biden to 'Go to hell' after being publicly mocked by White House

Government lawyers had opposed the release of the affidavit but the judge ordered it unsealed with redactions the Justice Department said were necessary to protect an ongoing investigation involving national security.

In its application for a search warrant, the Justice Department said the investigation was related to "willful retention of national defense information," an offense that falls under the Espionage Act, "concealment or removal of government records" and "obstruction of a federal investigation."

The warrant, which was personally approved by Attorney General Merrick Garland, authorized the FBI to search the "45 office" -- a reference to the 45th US president's private office at his Mar-a-Lago residence -- and storage rooms.

In addition to investigations into his business practices, Trump faces legal scrutiny for his efforts to overturn the results of the November 2020 election, and for the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.

Trump was impeached for a historic second time by the House after the Capitol riot -- he was charged with inciting an insurrection -- but was acquitted by the Senate.

‘Throwing in the towel with Blake Masters already?’ Major Republican super PAC bails on Trump’s Senate pick in Arizona

According to a report by Politico on Friday, the primary super PAC for Senate Republicans is canceling close to $8 million in ads in Arizona, a move that indicates the GOP could be cooling on its support for Senate nominee Blake Masters.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, is getting rid of $8 million worth of ads that were to begin airing in the fall. The amount is reportedly approximately half of what the fund had originally planned to spend in Arizona for the November primaries.

"News: GOP super PAC SLF canceling $8m in ad buys in Arizona Senate race, about half its reservations. Will raise questions about GOP view of Blake Masters. Group also cutting two weeks of ads for Murkowski; they think she’s in good shape."

Masters is running against Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and according to Politico, Republicans believe that protecting Senate seats in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio, as well as flipping Georgia and Nevada, is more important than flipping Arizona.

IN OTHER NEWS: Former US Attorney explains why he's much more interested in the memo that's attached to the Mar-a-Lago affidavit

The super PAC said it has plans to reallocate the money elsewhere but isn't giving up on Arizona. Senate Leadership Fund President Steven Law said the PAC is "leaving the door wide open" in the state.

“We’re leaving the door wide open in Arizona, but we want to move additional resources to other offensive opportunities that have become increasingly competitive, as well as an unexpected expense in Ohio,” said Law. “We think the fundamentals of this election strongly favor Republicans, we see multiple paths to winning the majority, and we are going to invest heavily and strategically to achieve that goal.”

The move caused many to speculate whether the GOP was giving up on Masters. New York Times national political reporter Shane Goldmacher speculated that PAC's move was a message to Republican donor Peter Thiel.

"Confirmed: The main Senate GOP super PAC is cutting *four weeks* of TV time reserved in Arizona. This is about Blake Masters, who is down in the polls. But it's also very much a message to Peter Thiel, who they want to step up."

Arizona Republic Journalist Elvia Diaz shared Goldmacher's tweet on social media with the caption, "GOP throwing (in) the towel with Blake Masters already?"

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Masters earlier this summer. "Arizona is a State where the 2020 Election was Rigged and Stolen, and a very thorough audit proved it," Trump said in a statement. "Blake knows that the ‘Crime of the Century’ took place, he will expose it and also, never let it happen again."

NAACP calls for federal investigation after Black man killed by Atlanta police while suffering mental break

The parents and leaders of the NAACP are calling for a federal investigation after 22-year-old Nygil Cullins was shot and killed in Atlanta as he suffered from a mental break. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that NAACP leaders joined the family for a news conference in Atlanta.

Georgia NAACP state conference President Gerald Griggs along with Atlanta NAACP President Richard Rose said that they want the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct an investigation into the patterns and practices of the Atlanta Police Department.

Cullins was killed on May 18 after a confrontation with the police at the Fogo de Chao steak house on Piedmont Road. Cullins had been with his parents, Dr. Mya Speller Cullins and Quinten Cullins, earlier in the evening at his apartment. He suffered from bipolar schizophrenia and his parents called 911 for help after noticing their son was having a mental break.

“I made sure I was very specific about his age, his demographic, his location his background about his mental state,” said Quinten Cullins to CBS 46 News. “An hour and 15 minutes passed, an hour and 20 minutes passed and he left. Two hours later the paramedics pulled up and the police pulled up. They didn’t ask what was the details, what he had on, or what was his state when he left. The paramedics took off the gloves and got back in the car, the police got back in the car and pulled off.”

IN OTHER NEWS: Affidavit suggests 'significant number of civilian witnesses' flipped on Trump: legal analyst

The police were called to the steak house about an unruly customer on May 18. After the police arrived, the situation escalated into a physical confrontation. One officer tased Cullins to no avail. Cullins began heading towards a door when a security guard tackled him, Cullins then pulled out a gun and shot the security guard before the police fired at Cullins.

The security guard survived his injuries but Cullins died at the scene. His parents learned that he had died once they arrived at the steak house.

The family said that they did not have any communication with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as the case is being investigated, and the NAACP leaders want more transparency from the department.

“I have no problem with the judicial system, the police officers, my problem comes about the lack of services and resources available for mental health patients," said Dr. Cullins. "They have nothing in place when I’m telling you that my son is hallucinating, he is at his worst state and he is in a manic phase. What services, what support, what is in place in that county and other counties for individuals like my son who needed help?”

Griggs suggested legislative changes to the state's open records laws so that information can be released in certain circumstances about open investigations, which the law currently does not allow.

Woman with a nonviable fetus denied abortion in Louisiana

A woman in Louisiana is being denied an abortion despite her fetus being nonviable, according to WAFB. Nancy Davis was 10 weeks pregnant when an ultrasound revealed that her fetus has acrania — a condition in which the skull of the fetus is missing.

Acrania causes the death of a newborn baby within hours of being born and doctors at Woman's hospital in Baton Rouge advised her to have an abortion.

Davis and her attorney Ben Crump gave a press conference on Friday in front of the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge.

"Ten weeks into my pregnancy, I found out that my baby had a rare birth defect called acrania," she said. "The doctors told me that my baby would die shortly after birth. They told me that I should terminate the pregnancy, but because of the State of Louisiana abortion ban, they could not perform the procedure. Basically, they said I had to carry my baby to bury my baby. They seemed confused about the law and afraid of what would happen to them if they performed a criminal abortion according to the law."

IN OTHER NEWS: DOJ worried Trump's 'criminal confederates' might flee or tamper with evidence in Mar-A-Lago case

Davis added that she would be going to another state for the procedure.

"I want you to imagine what it's been like to continue this pregnancy for another six weeks after this diagnosis. This is not fair to me, and it should not happen to any other woman," she said.

According to the Guardian, Sen. Katrina Jackson (D-LA), the state senator who authored Louisiana’s abortion ban, said that the hospital should have authorized the abortion because the statute contains exceptions for nonviable fetuses outside of a mother’s womb, as is the case with Davis.

Trump seeks dismissal of civil suit filed by Capitol Police officer as his legal problems mount

Donald Trump has filed an appeal seeking to dismiss a civil suit filed by a Capitol Police officer on Friday. The lawsuit accuses the former president of inciting the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, which resulted in several deaths and 140 injured police officers.

According to documents shared by CBS News Congressional Correspondent Scott MacFarlane, Trump is arguing "Absolute Immunity" in the appeal.

"MEANWHILE Donald Trump is going to an appeals court to *again* seek dismissal of a civil suit filed by Capitol Police officer," wrote Macfarlane. "Suit accuses him of provoking Jan 6 attack Arguing 'absolute immunity.'"

According to The Washington Post, the civil lawsuit was filed by U.S. Capitol Police Officer Briana Kirkland on the one-year anniversary of Jan. 6 in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

IN OTHER NEWS: Explosive report claims a phony Rothschild heiress infiltrated Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s inner circle

Kirkland accused Trump of provoking the attack, which caused her emotional and physical pain. Kirkland was outnumbered 450 to 1 while she protected the Capitol doors and suffered a traumatic brain injury after the Trump-incited mob breached the building. The lawsuit contends that Trump "directed the mob" that attacked the Capitol building and resulted in her being "assaulted and battered."

"As the leader of this violent mob, who took their cues from his campaign rhetoric and personal tweets and traveled from around the country to the nation’s capital at Trump’s invitation for the January 6 rally, Trump was in a position of extraordinary influence over his followers, who committed assault and battery on Briana Kirkland,” read the complaint. “Trump, by his words and conduct, directed the mob that stormed the Capitol and assaulted and battered Briana Kirkland.”

In addition to scrutiny for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and over the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters, Trump is facing an FBI investigation related to the potential mishandling of classified documents that had been sent to Mar-a-Lago.

Among the records seized during the unprecedented search of the home of a former president were documents marked "Top Secret," "Secret" and "Confidential."

Trump, who is weighing another White House run in 2024, vehemently denounced the FBI raid and claimed that all of the material confiscated during the search had been previously "declassified."

The warrant to search Trump's home, which was personally approved by Attorney General Merrick Garland, directed the FBI to seize records "illegally possessed" in violation of three criminal statutes, including one falling under the Espionage Act, which makes it a crime to illegally obtain or retain national security information.

Trump is also facing investigations into his business practices.

Marjorie Taylor Greene tells President Joe Biden to 'Go to hell' after being publicly mocked by White House

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told President Joe Biden to "Go to hell" on Friday. The MAGA Republican made the comment following the Aug. 24 reveal from the White House that Greene had $183,504 in PPP loans forgiven.

Greene made the remark on Twitter and also shared a video of Biden saying that he did not respect MAGA Republicans. "I don't respect these MAGA Republicans," said the president in the clip. Greene responded by accusing Biden of allowing drugs into the country by leaving the border "wide open," arming the Taliban and supporting the genital mutilation of children.

"I don’t respect you for leaving our border wide open allowing an invasion & deadly drugs in daily," she whined. "Arming the Taliban, wrecking our economy, killing our energy independence, & supporting killing the unborn & genital mutilation of children. Go to hell Joe."

Journalist Aaron Rupar shared the entire clip of Biden's comments in which Biden said that he respected conservative Republicans but that he did not respect MAGA Republicans.

New video shows Black pastor in Alabama being arrested while watering neighbors' flowers

A report by NBC News on Thursday revealed a Black pastor in Childersburg, Ala. was arrested as he watered his neighbor's flowers. Officers from the Childersburg Police Department arrested Pastor Michael Jennings on May 22 for obstructing government operations after he refused to provide identification.

Video of the arrest shows released this week shows Jennings being a good neighbor by watering his neighbors' lawn when he is approached by the police. Another neighbor—a white woman—did not recognize the pastor when she first called the police about a suspicious person in the area.

The police asked Jennings what he was doing and he replied that he was "watering flowers." After the police ask him whose car was in the driveway, Jennings replied that it was his neighbors' vehicle. After being told that someone called the police, Jennings identified himself and noted that he lived across the street and was just taking care of his neighbors' flowers while they were out of town.

"I'm supposed to be here. I'm Pastor Jennings. I live across the street," said Jennings. "I'm looking out for they house while they gone," he said. He goes on to say they had no right to approach him and he did nothing wrong before the police tell him someone called them about a suspicious person.

"I don't care who called y'all. You want to lock me up. Lock me up. I'm not showing y'all anything. I'm gonna continue watering these flowers. ... I don't care who called y'all. Lock me up and see what happens."

Jennings accused the officers of racially profiling him, which they denied. When the police asked him how they were supposed to know if he was telling the truth about watering the flowers, he replied "Because I had the water hose in my hand. I was watering the flowers."

The woman who called the police told the officers who Jennings was once she recognized him and also advised them he lived across the street, that he was friends with the neighbors and she was sorry for her mistake. They arrested him anyway.

"This video makes it clear that these officers decided they were going to arrest Pastor Jennings less than five minutes after pulling up and then tried to rewrite history claiming he hadn’t identified himself when that was the first thing he did," said the pastor's lawyer Harry M. Daniels said. "This was not only an unlawful arrest. It’s kidnapping. It’s irrational, irresponsible and illegal."

"Chief McClelland and the Childersburg Police Department may think all they have to do is drop the charges and this all goes away," she said. "This was a crime, not a mistake. I would hope that the Childersburg Police Department would understand the difference."

More than a dozen police officers were caught texting about killing Black people in California

At least 15 police officers in Torrance, Ca. were caught exchanging racist text messages about killing Black people, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Some of the messages were unearthed during an investigation following the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Christopher DeAndre Mitchell in 2018 by officers Matthew Concannon and Anthony Chavez. Mitchell was shot as he sat inside of his car in a grocery store parking lot. When the family held a vigil outside of the police station the next day, the officers shared text messages calling Mitchell the N-word.

“Was going to tell you all those [N-word] family members are all pissed off in front of the station,” said one. “Gun cleaning Party at my house when they release my name??" Another officer replied, "Yes absolutely let's all just post in your yard with lawn chairs in a firing squad."

Two more officers, Christopher Tomsic and Cody Weldin were caught spray-painting a swastika inside of an impounded vehicle. A search warrant executed for the case recently unearthed at least 15 more police officers had exchanged violent, racist and homophobic messages for several years but were being suppressed by lawyers for the officers.

The documents contained racist cartoons of Black and Latino people as well as comments about lynching Black suspects and killing Black children.

“Lucky I wasn’t out and about,” wrote one. “D.A. shoot team asking me why they are all hung by a noose and shot in the back of the head 8 times each.” Another called a Black child "n*gglet." Yet another said he would “put down" Black children.

Both Tomsic and Weldin left the department in 2020 but it is unclear if they were fired or resigned to another precinct. Officer Brian Kawamoto said that he “wanted to make Torrance great again” and called Black Lives Matter protesters “savages." Tom Yu, the lawyer representing some of the officers, defended their comments.

“The bottom line is, if I sent a message to my co-worker about how I feel about certain people, why did the police have the constitutional right to seize that and use that against me?” questioned Yu. “If I’m making an enforcement act as a police officer, and I’m not making the enforcement decision based on how I feel, then who cares about how I feel?”

Nearly all of the officers involved with the texting scandal are still employed by the Torrance Police Department.

Florida man who assaulted Black family and greeted police with Nazi salute found guilty of federal hate crime

A Florida man was found guilty of a federal hate crime on Thursday, according to the Department of Justice. Twenty-nine-year-old Jordan Patrick Leahy was found guilty by a federal jury in Tampa of a racially-motivated attack against a Black man traveling with his family on Aug. 8.

The victim, only identified as J.T., was driving down the road with his wife and child when he came upon Leahy. Leahy called him racial slurs before trying to force his vehicle off the road for nearly one mile.

Leahy eventually fled the scene but after stopping at a red light J.T. pulled up behind him. Leahy then got out of his car and again yelled more racial slurs before punching J.T. in the chest. J.T. overpowered Leahy and placed him in a submission hold.

After police officers from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office arrived, Leahy "threw the Nazi salute" before noting he wanted to fight a random "colored person.” Leahy also told the officers that Black people needed to be kept “in their areas.”

Leahy later told the officers that he wanted to shoot 60 to 70 people in the face and before killing himself by shooting himself in the neck and called his would-be quest “the most fulfilling thing he would experience in life.”

He will now serve up to 10 years in prison plus three years of supervised release. Leahy also faces a fine of up to $250,000. Assistant Attorney General Clarke said that the verdict should send a strong message that the DOJ is committed to prosecuting violent hate crimes.

“Across America, families must be able to freely travel our public streets without fear of being attacked because of race,” said Clarke. “This verdict should send a strong message that the Department of Justice remains firmly committed to prosecuting, to the fullest extent of the law, those who would use violence to enforce heinous racist beliefs.”

Sean Hannity whines student loan forgiveness is 'new green deal radical socialism'

Fox News host Sean Hannity complained about President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan during his radio show on Wednesday evening while acknowledging his low-wage workers would benefit from the plan.

Hannity told his listeners that he paid his way through college but didn't graduate before noting that several of his young staffers would benefit from student loan forgiveness, calling it "radical socialism."

“The people that likely will benefit the most are middle class. You know, think about it. You get out of college, you’re not making a lot of money," he stated. "We have a lot of young people that work on my TV show, they're not making a 125 grand," he said. "They're now eligible to get in some cases up to $20,000 and in other cases $10,000. This is New Green Deal radical socialism."

Hannity — who earns roughly $30 million annually — went on to say that Biden and the left were telling poor people that they should go into debt to pay for their solar panels and asked, "How stupid is that?" Hannity also said the policy was "insane," "perverse," and "reckless."

Former FBI official Peter Strzok slaps down Trump's defenses in Mar-a-Lago case

Former FBI Counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok attacked Donald Trump's comments regarding the former president's hoarding of classified documents. Strzok appeared on MSNBC with Nicolle Wallace on Wednesday after news broke about the government's year-long quest to obtain access to the documents taken by Trump to his Florida resort.

According to The Washington Post, Trump spent months resisting the government's request to return classified documents — including ignoring a grand jury subpoena — before the FBI conducted the raid on his Palm Beach residence on Aug. 8. Authorities reportedly removed more than 700 pages of documents.

Trump claimed that his executive privilege still applied, despite him no longer being the President of the United States. He also claimed that he had a standing order to declassify documents. Trump also claimed that many documents were taken by mistake due to frenzied packing at the White House.

Wallace asked Strzok about the national security implications involved with classified documents being taken and moved around Mar-a-Lago.

IN OTHER NEWS: Joe Biden shuts down Peter Doocy for shouting question about FBI at student loan event

"Well, Nicolle, there are huge national security implications to what the material — what happened to it and how it was handled," he replied. "I mean everything from the moment it was boxed up, the questions of who was boxing it up, what moving company was used and then certainly when it landed at Mar-a-Lago, all the different things about who might have had access to the room."

He continued by speculating who may have had access to the classified documents. "There's some indication that a variety of people were coming and going into the room, but who else might of had access to that outside the of time that CCTV footage was available? Did other guests have access? Did an electrician have access? Did a cleaning staff person have access?"

Strzok, who was fired after his anti-Trump text messages were revealed, also cited the lack of a visitor log at Mar-a-Lago as a national security issue. "All of these questions and particularly in light of the fact that there's some reporting that there doesn't seem to be a visitor log at Mar-a-Lago lays out a very real question about who — particularly if you're a Russian intelligence agent or a Chinese intelligence officer trying to recruit somebody in and around at Mar-a-Lago, certainly a place like a former president's residence is of extraordinary intelligence collection interest."

He went on to question if Trump still had classified documents in his possession and speculated that Trump may have wanted to keep the documents because he wanted to show them off because he thought they were "neat" and said he had the mentality of a 7-year-old kid. Strzok also said Trump may have wanted to keep the documents for future business dealings.

Donald Trump Jr. calls Biden student loan forgiveness a 'slap in the face'

Donald Trump Jr. attacked President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan on Wednesday. Biden announced his plan to forgive $10,000 in student loans for borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year and an additional $10,000 for Pell Grant recipients.

"Canceling student debt is a tax on the most responsible people in the country. Forcing people who worked hard to repay their loans or those who didn't have the luxury of going to college, to subsidize people who wasted $ on worthless gender study degrees is a slap in the face," he wrote.

Junior also complained after Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) noted that Black borrowers have more student debt than their peers.

"Black borrowers have nearly twice as much student debt ($52,700) after four years of college as our white peers ($28,000)," Bush wrote. "Student debt cancellation is a racial & economic justice issue. Period. What would canceling at least $50k in student debt mean for you?"

Trump did not mention that student loan borrowers who are having part of their loans forgiven are also taxpayers or how his father repeatedly did not pay his workers in his Twitter rant.

DOJ says it can't trust Trump's lawyers: report

The Department of Justice says it can't trust Donald Trump's lawyers due to the former president's frequent mind changes, according to The New York Times.

The New York Times report also noted that DOJ officials don't believe Trump's lawyers could speak with any authority for the former president because he often withholds information from his own representation.

"Justice Department officials, who have maintained an open channel with Mr. Trump’s representatives, have said they operate under the assumption that none of his attorneys can speak with authority for the former president, knowing he is liable to change his mind in a moment, or withhold information from his own representatives," said the report.

Trump appointee Judge Aileen M. Cannon asked Trump's lawyers on Tuesday if she had the jurisdiction to hear Trump's request to appoint a special master about the seized documents from Mar-a-Lago. She also informed them that they messed up the paperwork. “A sample motion can be found on the Court’s website,” she said.
