'Threats and harassment' are causing America's West to bleed election officials: report

Since the turmoil of the 2020 election, where numerous county election departments faced recalls, vote challenges and even threats of violence, more than half of Americans in the Western United States are served by new election officials — because so many experienced ones have left.

And those election officials who left — often because of harassment — took with them more than 1,800 years of combined experience, leaving new civil servants with a steep learning curve to support complicated voting processes, often with little federal support, according to a new report from bipartisan political reform group Issue One.

Minnesota Democrats fall victim to check fraud

The Minnesota Democratic Party and the International Franchise Association are the latest political committees to be victims of fraudulent check cashing, a Raw Story review of Federal Election Commission records showed.

A scammer stole $490 from the Minnesota Democratic Party — formally known as the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) — on Aug. 14.

‘Drain on your resources’: Trump rally costs Michigan city thousands in police bills

In his first visit to Michigan since announcing his 2024 presidential run, former President Donald Trump bashed President Joe Biden and electric vehicles, emphasizing the “decimation” of the state and jobs for its auto workers.

A New Jersey freshman congressman has violated a decade-old financial disclosure and conflicts-of-interest law — the same one he slammed his opponent for breaking.

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) violated the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act when, on Sept. 18, he was as much as four months late disclosing six personal stock transactions, according to a federal financial document reviewed by Raw Story.

Violent FBI informant active in extremist groups should get up to 30 months in prison: government

The government is seeking a sentence of 24- to 30 months in prison for a North Carolina man with an extensive history of involvement with violent, far-right groups — and who was caught with a semi-automatic rifle as a felon during a traffic stop in western New York last year.

As previously reported by Raw Story, Michael Alan Jones was active with the the Base, a neo-Nazi terror group, and the white nationalist group Patriot Front. He stormed the U.S. Capitol with the Proud Boys on Jan. 6. Jones also worked as an FBI informant for at least some period of time overlapping with his activity with far-right groups, spanning from 2018 to the time of his arrest in March 2022.

Busted: Tommy Tuberville invested in defense contractor while blocking military nominations

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) recently purchased up to $250,000 worth of stock in telecommunications technology company Qualcomm Inc., a federal defense contractor, while serving on the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services and actively blocking hundreds of military nominations and promotions, new congressional financial disclosures indicate.

Qualcomm and its subsidiaries have been the recipient of several dozen defense and homeland security contracts during the past two decades, according to federal contracting records reviewed by Raw Story.
