Kari Lake instructs Iowans to grill 2024 candidates about election fraud

NEVADA, Iowa — Former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake told Iowans Thursday she’s willing to “do anything I can” to help former President Donald Trump get back into office.

Lake addressed about 80 people at the Story County Republicans’ Lincoln Highway Dinner. Her visit comes as Iowans are beginning to consider 2024 Republican caucus candidates, but Lake is likely not running for president. She is still fighting in the courts over her claims of election fraud in her 2022 loss to Democrat Katie Hobbs.

A member of the audience asked Lake whether she would consider serving as Trump’s running mate in 2024.

'I see people arming up': Extremism expert sounds the alarm on the mainstreaming of fascism in the U.S.

We speak with award-winning journalist and author Jeff Sharlet, who has spent the last decade reporting on the growing threat of fascism across the United States. In his new book, The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War, Sharlet says the language of “civil war” has become central to right-wing rhetoric, mainstreamed by former President Donald Trump, Congressmember Marjorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans.

Dems call into question James Comer’s characterization of witnesses as ‘whistleblowers’

A far-right congressman who is leading an investigation into President Joe Biden and his family over influence-peddling allegations has either mischaracterized witnesses, or withheld evidence.

That’s according to Maryland Congressman James Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, who alleges that Rep. James Comer (R-KY), who chairs the committee, hasn’t been conducting the investigation in good faith, The Washington Post reports.

Trump explodes at 'these morons in the White House' after report blames him for Afghanistan debacle

Former President Donald Trump threw another Truth Social tantrum in the wake of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's thirty-four-felony-count indictment against him on Thursday afternoon, railing against President Joe Biden's handling of the United States' withdrawal from Afghanistan that he negotiated himself in 2020 before he lost the election.

The agreement outlined the future of the war-torn country and set parameters for the relationship between the US and the Taliban, which rules the Islamic Republican of Afghanistan through Sharia law.

Biden administration proposes rule saying trans athlete bans violate Title IX

President Joe Biden’s administration on Thursday said it will propose a rule to ensure transgender students can participate in school sports. The proposed rule comes a day after lawmakers in Kansas overrode Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto to block transgender students from participating in girls and women’s sports. The Department of Education’s proposed rule would say that laws like the one passed in Kansas violate federal Title IX laws, which prevent discrimination on the basis or sex, while also allowing some schools to adopt policies that limit transgender participation in sports at the ...

Biden, California lawmakers going to war against ‘junk fees’ on hotels, concert tickets and airlines

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Think of “junk fees” this way, says Susan Rice: You go to a department store and buy a pair of blue jeans. At the register, you pay the price that’s marked on the item plus tax. Period. But buy a concert ticket, an airline ticket, or pay your cable bill, and it’s too often not that simple, said Rice, President Joe Biden’s domestic policy adviser. The concert ticket may be advertised at $150. The airline ticket was listed at $200. But when you get the bill, it costs more due to a “convenience fee,” or “service fee” or seating charge or whatever. In California and Washington...

'Rank corruption': AOC calls for Clarence Thomas’ impeachment following bombshell report on megadonor gifts

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City has not been shy about calling for the impeachment of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The progressive Queens/Bronx Democrat has argued that Thomas — in light of his wife Ginni Thomas' efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results — seriously violated judicial ethics by refusing to recuse himself from a case involving the January 6, 2021 insurrection.

AOC also believes that Thomas and other justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade with their 5-4 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization lied about their views on abortion during their Senate confirmation hearings — a deception she considers impeachable. Now, Ocasio-Cortez has another reason for calling for Justice Thomas' impeachment: a bombshell ProPublica report that was published on April 6 and alleges that "for over 20 years," Thomas "has been treated to luxury vacations by billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow." One of them was a trip to Indonesia.

From Africa to US reelection campaign: VP Harris gets a reboot

An emotional trip as the first Black US vice president to Africa, followed by a frontline role pushing President Joe Biden's economic message at home is giving Kamala Harris a chance to steady her political ship ahead of a reelection campaign set to bring fierce scrutiny.

Returning home last weekend from a tour of Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia, Harris found herself treated to unusually positive headlines, not least in an Associated Press article, reproduced in news outlets across the United States, describing her as a "historic figure."

'Infecting minds': US book sent to teachers seeks to sow climate doubt

From crops to corals, a book circulated by a controversial US think tank is riddled with misleading claims about established climate science, in what campaigners slam as a bid to "infect" young minds.

The free-market Heartland Institute drew outrage from campaigners and educators, but applause from climate skeptics, when it sent the book to more than 8,000 American school teachers this year "to present facts" it said were ignored or distorted by pundits and the media.

Trump ally crashes and burns trying to accuse New York judge of bias

In an interview with CNN's Pamela Brown on Wednesday, pro-Trump legal activist and former Neil Gorsuch law clerk Mike Davis tried to argue that Juan Manuel Merchan, the judge presiding over the Trump indictment in Manhattan, is biased because of his daughter's campaign support for President Joe Biden — and failed miserably as Brown pointed out even Trump's own attorney, Joe Tacopina, is saying there is no indication Judge Merchan is biased.

"I don't think Trump is going to get a fair hearing in New York when you have the Democrat Party machine picking these local Manhattan trial judges and we haven't had a Republican governor in New York in 17 years, and so there's no chance he's going to get a fair appeal," said Davis. "So, yes, this is going to go to trial. And when you have a 95 percent jury pool that hates Donald Trump, you know, I know he's not—"
