Rand Paul blows up Biden and McConnell's 'secret deal' over personal snub

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said Monday that he blocked an anti-abortion federal judicial nominee he supports over a personal snub from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

President Joe Biden intended to nominate anti-abortion attorney Chad Meredith, a Federalist Society member who helped lead former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin's assault on reproductive rights, to a federal judgeship in Kentucky, according to emails released by Gov. Andy Beshear. Beshear and other Democrats blasted the pick, suggesting it was part of a deal between Biden and McConnell. The White House ultimately dropped the plan last week, though the reversal came after Paul refused to return a "blue slip" consenting to Meredith's nomination — not due to growing opposition from the president's own party.

Greg Abbott hasn’t attended one single funeral of an Uvalde victim: report

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Gov. Greg Abbott’s Democratic opponent in Texas’ 2022 gubernatorial race, has been vehemently critical of Abbott’s response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24 — which claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. And 25 News KXXV-TV, an ABC affiliate in Waco, may have given O’Rourke some more material to work with. According to an open-records request from 25 News, Abbott did not attend the funerals of any of the Uvalde victims.

25 News’ Nick Bradshaw reports that the station “obtained the governor's schedule from May 25 to June 14 through an open records request,” and that schedule shows that Abbott’s “last visit” to Uvalde was on June 5. According to Bradshaw, “The governor's schedule does show while in Uvalde, he did attend multiple public vigils, but no mentions of attending funerals.”

On Monday, Business Insider reported that a prominent House Republican on a budget task force bought up to $30,000 in stocks for two major defense contractors — as he pushed for an increase to the federal military budget.

"Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma and his wife invested up to $15,000 in Raytheon Technologies and up to $15,000 in Lockheed Martin, according to a recently filed federal financial disclosure. Members of Congress are only required to disclose the value of their investments in broad ranges," reported Madison Hall. Steve Bannon pledged he'd go 'medieval' at his trial — but it hasn't turned out that way

Former Donald Trump campaign manager Steve Bannon promised that he would go "medieval" in court once he was going to trial for his contempt of Congress case. While he never fully explained what he meant by that, the case appears to be closer to medieval torture than a medieval knight.

Already the judge in the case has suggested that Bannon accept a plea agreement and Bannon's own lawyer admitted that he has no defense. Bannon's own podcast declared him guilty while he was in court Monday.

Colorado Republican Heidi Ganahl selects election denier Danny Moore as running mate

Republican gubernatorial candidate Heidi Ganahl announced Monday that she selected former head of Colorado’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission Danny Moore as her running mate. Moore was removed from his leading role in the commission over social media posts he made spreading the false claim that widespread voter fraud cost former President Donald Trump a second term.

“Danny is a wonderful addition to our winning team. We share a common vision to lower Colorado’s soaring cost of living, gas prices, crime rates, and a commitment to making our children the priority,” Ganahl said in a statement. “Together we will undo Jared Polis’ far-left policies that continue to make it impossible for hard-working Coloradans to make ends meet. We will unite Colorado behind a vision of prosperity.”

Biden fails to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for Khashoggi murder — then UAE arrests his lawyer

President Biden met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Friday, as the Saudis agreed to increase oil production as well as open their airspace to Israeli commercial flights. Biden says he told the crown prince he held him responsible for the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was a U.S. resident, though Biden’s claims were later contradicted by a top Saudi official. We speak with Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of Democracy for the Arab World Now, who says Biden’s friendly fist bump with the crown prince will become the “legacy of President Biden as a man who broke his promises” on holding Saudi Arabia accountable and sends a troubling message to other wealthy oil-producing countries. Whitson also calls for the UAE to give civil rights lawyer Asim Ghafoor, who represented Khashoggi, “due process” after he was detained by officials while traveling through Dubai’s airport and sentenced to three years in prison for fraud charges he denies.
