The Trump we see today was influenced and propelled by various characters, as Rothfeld notes, starting with the infamous lawyer Roy Cohn — once an associate of Sen. Joe McCarthy — who Trump grew close to in the 1970's.  There's a direct line between Cohn's merciless attack philosophy and Trump's propensity to never admit fault.
