Former FBI general counsel and top prosecutor for Robert Mueller, Andrew Weissmann, responded to the reports about the weaponization of the Justice Department under Attorney General Bill Barr.

Speaking to MSNBC's Ari Melber on Thursday, Weissmann explained that there are some questions about whether Barr broke any rules.

New York Times reporter Charlie Savage was on the team of reporters that broke the recent report that special counsel John Durham and Attorney General Bill Barr were corruptly using the Justice Department in an attempt to discredit Robert Mueller's investigation. The effort failed, but only after nearly four years and $6.5 million in taxpayer dollars.

Two former prosecutors, now serving in Congress, have asked the inspector general at the DOJ to begin a probe into the conspiracy, but there's another entity under the department that could also be jockeying for the investigation: OPR - the Office of Professional Responsibility. OPR was started after Watergate in an effort to ensure the ethical standards of lawyers working under the DOJ.

MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace began her Thursday show with a takedown of conservative activist Tom Fitton, who is president of the far-right group Judicial Watch who spoke to the Justice Department this week.

Wallace linked Fitton to not only the conspiracy to overthrow the 2020 election beginning as early as the summer prior as well as the Trump documents scandal.

Rep. George Santos (R-NY), whose own background is a mystery lost in a cascade of falsehoods, previously espoused "birther" conspiracy theories about Barack Obama's origins while promoting Donald Trump's 2020 campaign.

The embattled New York Republican, who has admitted fabricating key elements of his biography, shared his theories on Obama's birth certificate in a newly revealed video, reported CNN.

New York Times reporter Adam Goldman, who frequently covers the FBI, remains one of the reporters focusing on the failures that the federal law enforcement had on Jan. 6 and why they failed so spectacularly to stop the violence that happened at the U.S. Capitol despite having the necessary information to do so.

"The mandate, in fact, is to investigate and stop international terrorism and domestic terrorism," Goldman explained. "So the committee itself has been well publicized now, spent a lot of time focussing on Trump but there was a subset, a number of people looking at the FBI."

Former President Donald Trump's comments about Nikki Haley on his personal social media platform Wednesday were dripping with sarcasm as he recalled their previous meeting where she asked for his blessing to run for president.

"She called me and said she'd like to consider it, and I said, 'You should do it,'" Trump recounted on Saturday. "I talked to her for a little while. I said, 'Look, you know, go by your heart if you want to run.'"

President Joe Biden handed over his keys to his Delaware beach house on Wednesday for the FBI to search for any additional possible classified information that could have made its way there after his time in the vice president's office.

Law school professor and former prosecutor Joyce White Vance emphasized that this is vastly different from what Donald Trump is dealing with in terms of his document scandal.

The co-hosts of "The View" shredded Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) during their Wednesday show as he is blocking state universities from teaching anything involving people of color or diversity. His methodology is that because it will be illegal to teach classes like African American history and other topics, it would be useless to get a degree in those studies.

"We're probably the first state that's leading by example," said DeSantis.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely seen as Donald Trump's biggest threat for the Republican presidential nomination, but panelists on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" agreed he would have trouble in the general election because he seems like a "jerk."

The GOP governor won re-election in November but is expected to enter the 2024 White House race, and The Atlantic's David Frum said he has the same problem that many GOP candidates have in the post-Donald Trump era, when conservatives rally behind primary candidates who repel Democratic and independent voters.

Former chief of staff for the secretary of Homeland Security, Miles Taylor, thinks that Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) is heavily involved with the plotting around the Jan. 6 attack. It was reported Tuesday that a "block" was placed on Perry's phone, which was seized by the FBI. The block is temporary until the federal appeals court decides whether the FBI should be able to possess it. A judge already agreed to the warrant for the phone previously.

Speaking about his work while at DHS, Taylor explained that Perry was seriously concerned about conspiracy theories radicalizing terrorists in the U.S. He also feared the ability of the FBI to get into Americans' phones.
