Nikki Haley making same mistake that doomed non-Trump 2016 candidates: reporter

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is the first Republican who has stepped in to challenge former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination.

However, Semafor reporter Benjy Sarlin thinks that Haley might already be making the same kinds of mistakes that doomed non-Trump candidates in 2016, as she is not being explicit enough in her reasons for wanting to challenge Trump for the nomination.

Firefighters 'ogled young women' and mocked Black homeless man in Iowa City: lawsuit

The Iowa City fire department is accused of an extensive culture of sexist, racist, and homophobic behavior in a new lawsuit from former employee Sadie McDowell, according to The Daily Iowan this week.

"In the 19-page lawsuit, McDowell describes the reported discriminatory actions she observed from her colleagues, both directed to her and others," reported Jami Martin-Trainor. "This includes officers intentionally looping in the downtown Iowa City area to 'ogle young women and comment on their bodies and/or clothing,' which was referred to as the 'Lust Lap.' McDowell also describes a situation that occurred in the summer of 2017 where she faced 'unwanted and non-consensual kissing and sexual groping' from a colleague."

'No moderate': Progressives issue warning as Trump-loving Republican announces campaign for presidency

Following former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley's launch of her 2024 presidential campaign Tuesday, progressives cautioned that while the Republican has spent years cultivating a so-called "moderate" public persona, her policy positions make it abundantly clear that as president, she would promote a right-wing agenda similar to the Trump administration, in which she served for nearly two years.

Haley, who also served as South Carolina's governor before joining the administration of former President Donald Trump in 2017, has advanced right-wing policies both domestically and abroad, and since leaving public office four years ago, has used her platform to promote "extreme hardline positions on foreign policy," wrote Daniel Larison at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

The Republican has strived to center her response to the 2015 Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston by a white supremacist as evidence of her moderation, including in her campaign launch video footage of the speech she gave weeks after the massacre when signing a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol.

Romney sounds the alarm: How Trump could pull off a repeat of 2016 — and keep his hold on the GOP

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), one of former President Donald Trump's most outspoken Republican critics in the Senate, is sounding off a warning, reported the Huffington Post on Tuesday: Trump could win the nomination again for 2024 — the exact same way he did in 2016.

"A large field of presidential contenders in 2024 could lead to a redo of the 2016 presidential race and help make Donald Trump the Republican presidential nominee once again, according to Sen. Mitt Romney," reported Igor Bobic. "'The only way that [scenario] could be prevented is if it narrowed down to a two-person race eventually. That means donors and influencers say to their candidate ― if they’re weakening: ‘Hey, time to get out,’' Romney told HuffPost in an interview on Tuesday."

‘Read the room’: Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign announcement panned by left and right

Former Trump Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has officially launched her 2024 presidential campaign, being the first to formally challenge her former boss, without once mentioning him in her three-minute announcement released at 6:48 AM Tuesday.
