Claims about COVID-19 made by Vice President Mike Pence received a harsh fact-check on Tuesday evening.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, used multiple charts to explain why Pence's thinking was incorrect.

The controversial "Hey Reb" statue at the University of Nevada Las Vegas was taken down Tuesday evening.
Journalist Michael Lyle of the Nevada Current posted videos and pictures he took during his evening walk.
In August of 2019, the Native American Student Association at UNLV urged the school to remove the statue.
“On a campus that’s supposed to be ‘different, daring and diverse,’ we have this statue of an Indian killer,” group President Ryan Boone, a member of the Walker River Paiute tribe, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal at the time.

One week before New York Democrats will vote in the state's Democratic Party primary, progressives are turning up the heat in a primary bid against the chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee, Politico reported Tuesday.
"Desperate for victory after watching the presidential nomination slip through their fingers, progressives have found a new cause to rally around. Across the country, they’re channeling their grief, volunteer muscle and small-dollar donations into Jamaal Bowman, a left-wing candidate in New York trying to oust decades-long incumbent Congressman Eliot Engel," Politico reported.
"Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all of whom have shown caution in the past about backing primary challengers to incumbent Democrats, have endorsed Bowman. Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party, two left-wing groups that took different paths during the presidential race, announced they are coming together to spend more than a half-million dollars to elect Bowman," Politico reported. "Former aides to Sanders and Warren have also publicly lined up behind Bowman."
During the 2018 midterms, Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress after beating Rep. Joe Crowley in the primary. Crowley was serving as the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus at the time he lost his Democratic Primary. Engel currently serves as Chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee.
"The all-hands-on-deck strategy is a striking show of unity after the presidential campaign ended with deep rifts on the left — and it’s had a catalytic effect on Bowman’s bid in the run-up to the June 23 primary. But their efforts have also exposed party fissures, spurring Democratic establishment powerhouses such as Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Jim Clyburn to throw their support behind Engel," Politico reported.

Police and the unions that represent them continue to lie to the public.
"Right now we're in the midst of a once-in-a-generational national conversation about policing, race and justice -- driven after the protests and the police killing of George Floyd," MSNBC's Chris Hayes reported. "It's the first time the fundamental rule of police are in the spotlight."
"Republicans admit things have to change. yet even now, while we're all paying attention, while the smartphones are on, while the lights are blaring, we keep getting new examples of police rushing to justice or outright lying to the public," he explained.
He recounted how police unions in New York City falsely claimed that three officers had been intentionally poisoned while eating at a Shake Shack.
"And I know this story is kind of a small one that has to do with milkshakes -- seems like a funny thing, but it's part of a much larger, more important issue: the legitimacy crisis in American policing is facing in this moment.
"We have seen example after example of police rushing to judgment or just flat out lying to our faces in total Trumpian fashion," he noted. "There are so many examples of this, just from the protests alone."
The host listed recent examples.
"Of course, police, like any institution, any government body, are going to make mistakes, lots of mistakes," he noted. "But it's just not acceptable to have police lying so casually about matters large and small, and they keep doing it. this legitimacy crisis has gotten so bad, that even President Trump was forced to act, or at least kind of to go through the facsimile of acting."

On Tuesday, The Daily Beast reported that President Donald Trump is considering a lawsuit against his niece, over the upcoming release of her tell-all book.
"According to two people familiar with the situation, Donald Trump has told people close to him that he’s getting his lawyers to look into the Mary Trump matter, to explore what could be done in the way of legal retribution — or at least a threat — likely in the form of a cease and desist letter," reported Asawin Suebsaeng and Lachlan Cartwright. "One of the sources with knowledge of the situation said that in the past couple of days, the president appeared irked by news of her book and at one point mentioned that Mary had signed an NDA years ago."
"Mary Trump signed an NDA following a 2001 settlement after litigation disputing Fred Trump’s estate, according to people familiar with the matter," said the report. "That NDA states she is not allowed to publish anything regarding the litigation or her relationship with Donald, Maryanne and Robert."
On Sunday, it was reported that Mary Trump was prepared to move forward with the book, Too Much And Never Enough, which will — among other things — describe her role in helping break the New York Times story from two years ago that exposed the Trump family's "fraudulent" tax practices that went into the president's inheritance. That story implicated not just Trump but his sister, former federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who announced her retirement shortly after the story broke.

Online trolls from Russia were caught spreading disinformation across more than 300 online platforms, The Daily Beast reported Tuesday.
"The Russian troll factory that meddled in the 2016 election isn’t the only unit in Moscow’s troll army. Since 2014, a different and more shadowy disinformation crew linked to the Russian government has been spreading forgeries and disinformation across social media. In a report released Tuesday, the social media tracking firm Graphika has uncovered the online trail of Secondary Infektion stretching across half a dozen years, two continents, and thousands of fake articles," The Beast reported.
They interviewed Ben Nimmo, Graphika’s director of investigations.
“When we made the investigative breakthrough in January, we knew we might be on the verge of something major, but we never expected to find over 2,500 pieces of content across more than 300 platforms,” Nimmos said. “I’ve seen some cross-platform operations in my career, but nothing even close to this.”
Graphika found the disinformation translated into seven languages.
"Facebook gave the world the first hint about the existence of Secondary Infektion in May 2019 when it announced the takedown of a handful of accounts engaged in coordinated inauthentic activity. The company’s attribution of the accounts to Russia raised eyebrows and Nimmo, then at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, authored the first report delving into the group and giving the operation its name (a nod to the KGB’s attempt to paint HIV/AIDS as a U.S.-made bioweapon)," The Beast reported.
"Secondary Infektion appears to be a different, if parallel, line of effort alongside its more well-known Moscow-backed disinformation cousin, the Internet Research Agency (IRA). The IRA, which is run by Russian catering magnate and Putin crony Yevgeny Prigozhin, became famous for its role in social media meddling during the 2016 presidential election," The Beast explained. "It’s less clear who within the Russian government is behind Secondary Infektion, but it sometimes crossed paths with the IRA. During the 2016 presidential campaign, both the IRA and Secondary Infektion worked to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign."

On Tuesday, the Tulsa World spoke with James Massery, one of the many supporters of President Donald Trump who are already gathering to attend his Tulsa campaign rally on Saturday. He made it clear to reporters that he doesn't fear COVID-19 — and if it kills him, it'll just be a shame he wasn't able to vote for Trump.
"Whether or not I get it, it doesn't bother me in the least," said Massery, who is from Preston, a small community about 30 miles from Tulsa. "If I get it, I'll deal with it ... if it takes me out, it's just going to make me mad that I can't vote for Trump in this coming election."
Trump has faced widespread criticism for moving forward with rally plans even in the middle of a spike in coronavirus cases in the area — which threatens to turn his rally into a "super-spreader" event that infects hundreds of people who will then return to their surrounding communities. The criticisms have been enforced by a waiver Trump is asking supporters to affirm, that would bar them from suing the campaign if they become infected at the rally.
Tulsa Mayor G. T. Bynum, a Republican, has said he wishes the president would hold his rally in another city, but that he will not challenge or try to stop the rally from moving forward.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against former National Security Advisor John Bolton, seeking to prevent the distribution of his upcoming book, which the Trump administration says has classified information.
The book, titled The Room Where It Happened, is scheduled to be released next Tuesday.
Law Prof. Rick Hasen was perplexed by the lawsuit since it was unlikely to prevent the contents of the book from being revealed. He suggested the lawsuit may have had an audience of one: the president of the United States.
However, there may have been darker motivations at stake.
Attorney Lupe B Luppen, who operates the popular Twitter account @nycsouthpaw, noted one fascinating detail.
Luppen wasn't the only person to notice the detail.

On Tuesday, Fox News reported that the Lincoln Project, a political group run by anti-Trump conservatives, are set to air a new ad highlighting President Donald Trump's apparent physical frailty walking down a ramp after giving the address at West Point last week.
“Something's wrong with Donald Trump," said the narrator in the ad. "He’s shaky. Weak. Trouble speaking. Trouble walking."
The ad is slated to run in the Washington, D.C. area — all but guaranteeing the president will see it on his own TV.
The ramp video has reinvigorated rumors about the president's health. Trump has defended himself, tweeting, "The ramp that I descended after my West Point Commencement speech was very long & steep, had no handrail and, most importantly, was very slippery. The last thing I was going to do is ‘fall’ for the Fake News to have fun with."
The president has reportedly been bothered by the attack ads released by the Lincoln Project. He has attacked them as, "A group of RINO Republicans who failed badly 12 years ago, then again 8 years ago, and then got BADLY beaten by me" — which the group in turn used to fundraise to take out more attack ads.

Black-ish actress Jenifer Lewis, who plays the mother of the show's lead actor on the ABC show, was interviewed by MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber.
The host played a clip from the show of the actress's character being dismayed to learn that somebody is a Republican.
The two discussed the 2020 presidential campaign, with Lewis urging viewers to support former Vice President Joe Biden.
"We have had enough of this madness," she said. "The blatant cruelty, the lies upon lies."
"We could have been warned back in January," she said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic. ""Look how many people have died."
"This is wrong, we need leadership," Lewis said.

At a news conference on Tuesday, according to the Tampa Bay Times, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) closed the door on the possibility of imposing another stay-at-home order or similar measure — even as a new outbreak of COVID-19 in his state is causing a spike in cases.
"'We’re not rolling back,' DeSantis said during a news conference when asked whether he would consider stopping some reopening efforts. 'The reason we did the mitigation was to protect the hospital system,'" reported Kirby Wilson and Lawrence Mower.
"DeSantis said the recent rise in the number of cases and the rate of positive cases can be attributed to a change in the state’s testing strategy," said the report. "The strategy is two-pronged: health officials conduct targeted testing of people who spend lots of time in close proximity with one another. At the same time, the state has made it easier for the largely asymptomatic general public to get screened. For now, the focus of health officials should remain on vulnerable populations like nursing homes, DeSantis argued."
"On Tuesday, Florida reported 2,783 new coronavirus cases, more than it has ever recorded in a single day," said the report. "It was the fourth time in six days that the state reported a record number of cases."
DeSantis has broadly come under fire for his initial reaction to the coronavirus pandemic, dragging his feet on shutting down beaches and imposing a lockdown. One former state health official, Rebekah Jones, says she was fired to keep data about the spread of the virus quiet, an allegation DeSantis denies.

A hilarious debate about the gender of a Defense Department dog has turned into a lawsuit, according to a new court filing, reported CNN's Vivian Salama.
Reporter Freddy Martinez filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request demanding to know the gender of the dog President Donald Trump used last November to do a photo-op with.
Conan, the dog involved in a military operation to kill ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was brought to the White House as Trump stared down impeachment. He was mocked at the time for trying to distract Americans with a "shiny furry object."
Trump, who doesn't like dogs according to his ex-wife, called the dog a "he" after his White House and the DOD called the dog a "she." Other government told Stars and Stripes that Conan was male.
But photos of the dog caused further questions as no genitals seemed to be exposed as is traditional with male dogs.
Louise Mensch, former British parliamentarian, tweeted (then deleted) that Americans should simply stop the debate and FOIA the gender of the dog from the Defense Department.
The problem with the questions about the dog's gender isn't about the dog at all, it's a question about whether the DOD is bending to the will of the president over something as minute as the gender of a dog. If they're doing it then, the question is: what else are they lying about for the president?
It's unclear if the DOD will make the move to redact the dog's genitalia.
