Field of Dreams game makes history and creates new memories for White Sox and Yankees players: ‘It blew me away’

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito stared at the batter’s eye shaped as a barn in the cornfield beyond the center-field wall. Standing in the dugout along the third-base line wearing a vintage Sox uniform that was inspired by what the team wore in the early 20th century, Giolito took in all the festivities associated with playing a game in a cornfield. “It blew me away,” Giolito said of his first reaction to seeing the temporary 8,000-seat ballpark on the Dyersville farm where the Academy Award-nominated 1989 movie “Field of Dreams” was filmed. “I was expecting to see a...

#GOPPedoRing trends after prominent Republican indicted for sex trafficking a minor: 'Hey QAnon we found them'

Republican strategist and campaign manager Anton Lazzaro was indicted Thursday morning on five counts of sex trafficking and three counts of obstruction of justice. He is the latest in a line of Republicans involved in underage sex scandals, leading activists and progressive groups to allege it's part of a #GOPPedoRing.

Ironically, the QAnon conspiracy group has long alleged that Democrats have been running some sort of secret sex ring with children where they drink their blood in pizza parlors. But in real life, a startling number of Republicans over the past 20 years have been linked to underage sex scandals.

DeSantis admits defeat in threats to cut pay of school leaders who impose mask mandates

DeSantis had claimed that he would cut the salaries of superintendents and funding to community schools that mandate students wear masks. Currently, Florida is suffering a massive increase in COVID-19 cases and most parents are desperate to protect their children. School districts defy anti-mask order — your move, Greg Abbott

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas school districts are bucking Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order that bans mask mandates, putting the governor in a delicate position as he continues to emphasize the need for personal responsibility to curb COVID-19 as hospital beds fill up. "As long as things are not that bad, then a personal responsibility theme out of Republicans and conservatives will work, has worked and might continue to work," said Cal Jillson, a Southern Methodist University political science professor. "But the worse the delta variant crisis becomes, the less tenable personal responsibility i...

Northern California's Dixie fire has burned more than 500,000 acres, but growth has slowed

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Dixie fire had burned more than half a million acres across Northern California as of Wednesday, but light winds helped to stave off the intense growth that pushed flames into Lake Almanor towns last week. The enormous wildfire — now the state’s second-biggest of all time — had charred 501,008 acres of land and was 30% contained Wednesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, or Cal Fire. Most of its overnight expansion occurred after it jumped containment lines northwest of Chester and to the northeast moving closer to Janesvil...
