Republicans ridiculed for addressing media threats to Yahoo CEO who left in 2017

This week, House GOP leaders threatened that they would obstruct any effort to obtain the phone records of Republican officials who may have been involved in the Jan. 6 attack. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) drew criticism and accusations that his efforts to block the subpoenas were an obstruction of justice, while others asked what he had to hide.

But there was one piece of the formal threats that are drawing mockery even days after. McCarthy and 11 other GOP leaders joined in sending letters to media heads so they would have a written threat. Using a column critical of McCarthy in the Washington Post as a leaping-off point, "The ReidOut" host Joy Reid began by stating, "Nobody's afraid of this guy. Is that something that could really happen?"

Kevin McCarthy and Marjorie Greene hit with ethics complaints for threatening telecom companies

On Friday, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) announced they had filed a complaint against House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for threatening telecommunications companies not to comply with subpoenas for phone records from members of Congress close to the January 6 Capitol attack.

"House rules require members to uphold the laws of the United States and to conduct themselves at all times in a manner that reflects creditably on the House," said CREW in a statement. "The threats of McCarthy and Greene do neither. Threatening retaliation for complying with legally valid document demands and preservation requests appears to violate 18 U.S.C. § 1505, which prohibits obstructing congressional investigations, and does not reflect creditably on the House."
