'That's not legally sound': Legal analyst flattens Rudy Giuliani's claim lower felonies shouldn't result in FBI raids

Rudy Giuliani is grasping at straws as his own comments continue to make his legal situation more complicated. The latest tenuous defense from former President Donald Trump's lawyer is that if someone is accused of a lower-level felony then they shouldn't be raided by the FBI.

"I don't know why they're searching my house. I have no idea what they, what they allege I supposedly did, acted as an agent for some Ukrainian? It's just totally untrue," Giuliani said on his radio show. "I don't know what they base it on. Either their own supposition or some liar? But, I can prove that I wasn't. I've offered to come there and prove it."

New reporting is coming out on the scope of the federal investigation into former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"Since at least October 2019, federal investigations have been looking into Rudy Giuliani's effort to convince the White House and a reluctant State Department to grant a visa to a former Ukraine official, according to two people briefed on the matter. These sources tell The Daily Beast that the visa issue is one aspect of the federal probe into whether Giuliani's efforts during the Trump-Ukraine saga constituted illegal lobbying on behalf of foreign officials or individuals. According to people with knowledge of the matter, including Giuliani's own legal team, federal investigators are also investigating his attempt to get the former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch fired," The Beast reported Friday evening.

Meet the bizarre cast of characters involved in the Rudy Giuliani probe

Before he was elected mayor of New York City in 1993, Republican Rudy Giuliani was a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York — and he had a reputation for being tough, focused and aggressive. But now, ironically, Giuliani finds himself being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice. His home and office in Manhattan were recently searched as part of a DOJ investigation of his Ukraine-related activities of the Trump era. And CNN's Marshall Cohen offers some insights on those search warrants in an article published on May 7.

Cohen explains, "The Justice Department's criminal investigation into Rudy Giuliani involves an international cast of characters: Trump White House allies, Republican lawyers, Ukrainian oligarchs, diplomats, right-wing journalists and other figures who aren't household names…. Giuliani has denied all wrongdoing and claimed the investigation itself is unconstitutional."

Devin Nunes attorney ordered to pay over $20K in legal fees to CNN after judge rules lawsuit 'frivolous'

A federal judge made good on a his warning that he'd sanction the lawyer for Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), who filed a series of failed defamation suits against media outlets. As Law&Crime points out, U.S. District Judge Richard Bennet ruled that Nunes' attorney, Steve Biss, had "unreasonably and vexatiously" tried to drag on their lawsuit against CNN after the case had already been dismissed with prejudice for failing to state a claim in March.

Despite the dismissal, Biss filed an amended complaint that the judge described as "nothing more than a repetition of the original complaint with no new material factual allegations."

New revelations about Trump's lies keep pointing back to Russia

New facts are still coming out about former president Donald Trump's use of Russian misinformation to get elected president -- and to nearly overturn his election loss.
