Expert: GOP in crisis after Trump-loving Republicans enabled extremists

The Republican Party’s indulgence of far-right extremists has left it divided entering the primary season -- and that’s created uncertainty as to whether the party will dominate the midterm elections as expected.

That’s the view of Howard Schweber, a national expert in American constitutional law and politics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In an exclusive Raw Story interview, Schweber said former President Donald Trump has placed the party in a bind.

“We are in a strange territory because Donald Trump has already divided the Republican Party to a very significant extent, Schweber said. “By going around endorsing candidates against sitting Republicans or others backed by the state Republican parties, he’s essentially promoting a sort of insurgency within the party.”

Prosecutors unveil 'overwhelming' evidence in Jan. 6 conspiracy case against Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio

The government sharpened its case against Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, arguing in a memo in support of pretrial detention on Monday that he “imposed a command-and-control structure” on a newly created “national rally planning” chapter set up to carry out the attack.

Tarrio, who was the national chairman of the Proud Boys at the time of the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol, went before a federal judge in Miami for a detention and removal hearing on Tuesday morning. At the hearing’s conclusion, Magistrate Judge Lauren F. Louis ordered Tarrio to remain jailed while awaiting arraignment on his charges in the District of Columbia.

Conservatives say California is a disaster -- but facts show the opposite

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for decades, you’ve probably noticed that conservatives hate California. It’s an obsession.

Donald Trump’s disdain for the state is well known. But conservative anti-California hatred goes far beyond the ex-occupant of the Oval Office.

Native American tribal sovereignty must no longer be overlooked

This week everyone is talking about the sovereignty of nations. Everyone is standing with Ukraine and horrified by Putin, because Ukraine is a sovereign independent nation and the Russian army invaded for no reason.

There have been a lot of jokes that Putin’s justifications of the invasion are the same as if Mexico invaded the United States because it used to control Texas. These jokes highlight how ridiculous Putin’s claims are. They point out that you cannot invade another country because the land used to be part of your country.

How the left can overcome cancel culture's overreach

I had a meeting with some colleagues about a month ago. We were in a leadership program discussing a video about dealing with differences.

In my mind, working on autopilot, I assumed the differences were racial and ethnic. I said, somewhat offhandedly, that since our state is now run by a Republican, diversity may be de-emphasized.

Why FDR's New Deal is still the blueprint for domestic success

After Joe Biden won the election, and after the White House began pushing passage of the nearly $2 trillion American Jobs Plan, there was a lot of talk about the new president being the next Franklin Roosevelt.

I wanted to believe it, but being the skeptic that I am, I figured this was more propaganda than genuine belief by the 46th president. But after watching an interview with historian Heather Cox Richardson, it seems these are not mere words. Biden really sees history pivoting.

Chaos engulfs MAGA rioter's court hearing as prosecutors try to block him from pleading guilty to lesser charge

Texas Three Percenter leader Lucas Denney came to court on Monday prepared to plead guilty to one count of assaulting a law enforcement officer at the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but a federal judge’s decision to postpone the hearing gives the government time to go back to the grand jury to obtain a new indictment.

Denney, who was dubbed #PoleTosser by online sleuths, headed the Patriot Boys militia and posed alongside Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) at a political event last year. At the time of his arrest in Texas near the Mexican border in December, Denney was charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.

Four generations of Ukrainian women can't flee to Australia due to one piece of paper

Speaking to Tetiana as she sits in Kharkiv means hearing the explosions on the other end of the line. She is with her elderly mother, who is ill and injured after falling trying to get to a bomb shelter last week.

Tetiana and her mother, daughter and granddaughter would normally be able to flee to Australia on a tourist visa, where Tetiana holds citizenship. However, one thing stops the women from getting into Australia: a piece of paper signed by the daughter's ex-husband.

Proud Boy target of federal search warrant: ‘Main operating theater’ should be front of Capitol

Federal investigators obtained a search warrant for a Pennsylvania man allegedly designated by Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio as “upper tier leadership” in an encrypted message group set up for planning for the Jan. 6 assault on the US Capitol by the far-right street-brawling group.

LNP/Lancaster Online reported on Saturday that the Pennsylvania man subject to the search warrant, who is also identified as “Person 3” in a conspiracy indictment against Tarrio and five other Proud Boys, is John Charles Stewart aka Johnny Blackbeard, of Carlisle, Pa. The government also obtained a warrant to search the home of Proud Boy Jeremy Bertino in Belmont, NC. Federal agents raided Bertino’s home on March 8, the same day that Tarrio was arrested in Miami.

FBI raids home of un-indicted North Carolina Proud Boy in conspiracy case

While Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was being arrested in Miami, FBI agents in North Carolina were executing a search warrant at the home of Jeremy Bertino, a high-profile member with close ties to the street brawling group’s national leadership, at his home in the Charlotte suburbs.

In a motion to temporarily seal the indictment of Tarrio and five other Proud Boys on conspiracy charges, the government referenced two search warrants for the residences of co-conspirators in Belmont, NC and Carlisle, Pa. At least one of the warrants was executed on Bertino’s residence in North Carolina on Tuesday, according to a source with knowledge of the matter who spoke to Raw Story on condition of anonymity.

The truckers convoy camped outside of DC is running on fumes

With the far-right truckers convoy stuck in a perpetual loop around Washington, DC, the leadership has found it necessary to scale back its ambitious demands to rescind emergency COVID orders and hold hearings on government’s handling of the pandemic.

Before the convoy made its initial foray around the Capitol Beltway, organizer Brian Brase told an angry crowd gathered at Hagerstown, Md. on March 5 that the convoy would “sit there in their backyard” and “wait until they legitimately drop the state of emergency, they drop the vaccine mandates, and they begin the process of bipartisan investigation… to find out the transparent version of the pandemic’s origins, and ask who is responsible for screwing this up so badly.”

Indictment of Proud Boys leader hints at coordination with other insurrection actors

With the indictment of Enrique Tarrio, the government has laid out the case that the Proud Boys utilized a command structure to mobilize members to take part in the Jan. 6 assault on the US Capitol, while dropping tantalizing hints about connections between the nationalist street brawling group and other potential actors in the conspiracy to prevent Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s election as president of the United States.

The new superseding indictment -- which also includes defendants Joe Biggs, Ethan Nordean, Charles Donohoe, Zach Rehl and Dominic Pezzola — already charged in two previous indictments — notes that on Dec. 19, 2020, President Trump announced a protest to coincide with Congress’ certification of the electoral college vote via tweet: “Big protest in DC on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!”

REVEALED: Bill Barr can't stand Rudy Giuliani -- and blames him for Trump's impeachment

Bill Barr's new book, One Damn Thing After Another, was released Tuesday and if there's one consistency, it's that he doesn't have many nice things to say about Rudy Giuliani.

Barr recalls the Ukraine scandal and how annoyed he was that former President Donald Trump had made it sound like Barr was lumped in along with his attorneys, like Giuliani. That disgust continues during the arrival ceremony for the Australian delegation.
