DeSantis loses again in lawsuit over his schools mask-mandate policy

A state trial judge has cleared Florida school districts to enforce strict mask mandates for students until a state appeals court can decide whether the DeSantis administration holds authority to enforce a parental veto over masks.

Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper had ruled last month that the governor abused his authority in ordering the state Department of Health and Department of Education to punish districts that limited parental discretion over mask wearing.

CNN's John Avlon does epic takedown of the post-Trump trend of Republicans saying one thing while doing another

CNN host John Avlon made an observation Wednesday that the post-Donald Trump Republican Party has thrown caution to the wind and is whipping out as much hypocrisy as they can muster.

Doing a commentary for the morning show, Avlon recalled the different sects of the former GOP like libertarians, evangelicals and the business community: they all wanted smaller top-down government. Meanwhile, Republican governors are running their states with the same top-down bureaucracy they once repelled.

Lincoln Project ad mocks Trump's falling popularity: ‘DeSantis is running away’ with your party

The Lincoln Project is out with a new ad noting how President Donald Trump's popularity is falling and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is taking over for him.

"Republicans in Washington and the Fox News echo chamber are having a hard time hiding their excitement over the ascension of Governor Ron DeSantis as party leader," said Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson. "Tune into Rupert Murdoch's Fox News at any given hour of the day and you'll see just who they think Republican voters should be listening to. Ron DeSantis is running away with the party Trump built, and so far there is seemingly nothing the weakened and fading Donald can do about it."

WATCH: Caitlyn Jenner's CNN interview turns into a trainwreck as she claims to be pro-choice while backing Texas law

On Tuesday, CNN's Brianna Keilar interviewed transgender former Olympian and Republican California recall candidate Caitlyn Jenner about several key issues in the election and around the country.

In the interview, Keilar asked if Jenner had "any regrets" about jetting off to Australia for a TV shoot during the campaign, which led some to speculate the entire campaign was a stunt to boost her acting career. "None whatsoever," said Jenner. "I signed on to do that months before I even thought about this campaign. And unlike most politicians, I actually honor a contract."

'A profile in selfishness': Miami newspaper slams Ron DeSantis

December will mark the second anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and it continues to imperil people all around the world — especially those who haven't been vaccinated for it. But the fact that COVID-19 has killed more than 4.5 million people worldwide (according to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore) doesn't stop far-right Republicans from either pushing anti-vaxxer ideas for being afraid to offend anti-vaxxers. And the Miami Herald's editorial board is slamming Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for ignorant comments he's made about COVID-19 vaccines.

Back in July, DeSantis spoke the truth when he said, "These vaccines are saving lives. They are reducing mortality" — and the Herald agrees with that statement. But on September 3, DeSantis said of vaccination, "It's about your health and whether you want that protection or not. It really doesn't impact me or anyone else."

Caitlyn Jenner says she supports Texas abortion ban and Ron DeSantis, but trashes ‘illegals’ in CNN interview

California Republican gubernatorial recall candidate Caitlyn Jenner says she supports a woman's right to choose – but also supports the right of Texas to ban abortion. She opposes the leading Republican in the recall race, Larry Elder, but says she doesn't "know" if his alleged domestic abuse is disqualifying. And she stands by her assessment that Florida GOP governor Ron DeSantis is doing a good job on the coronavirus pandemic despite his state leading the country in per-capita deaths.

When pressed, Jenner said "overall, as things change, when the pandemic came out he did a good job," saying DeSantis did a good job by "waiting" to respond to the pandemic.

Florida’s funeral homes are overwhelmed by COVID-19 deaths: 'Funerals and funerals and funerals'

One of the ways to gauge the severity of a COVID-19 surge in a particular state or city is how busy funeral homes become — and in Florida, according to CBS News, employees of funeral homes are absolutely swamped.

In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one in five new COVID-19 cases in the United States was occurring in Florida. Ron DeSantis, Florida's far-right Republican governor, has been receiving a great deal of criticism for his response to the COVID-19 surge; DeSantis has opposed social distancing measures, forbidden public schools from having mask mandates, and tried to score cheap political points with his MAGA base by railing against expert immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Kentucky governor sounds the alarm on COVID-19 surge: 'Our situation is dire’

A wide range of responses to the current COVID-19 surge are coming from governors in the United States, from far-right MAGA Republican governors who are downplaying the surge's severity (Florida's Ron DeSantis, Texas' Greg Abbott, South Dakota's Kristie Noem) to non-MAGA Republicans (Vermont's Phil Scott, Maryland's Larry Hogan, Massachusetts' Charlie Baker) and Democrats who are taking it seriously. One of the centrist Democrats who is sounding the alarm is Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who described the situation as "dire" during a September 5 appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Beshear said, "If I had the ability to do it right now, we would have a masking order when you are in public and indoors. We know that's a proven way to slow the spread of the virus and ultimately help our health care capacity…. Our situation is dire."
