Giuliani being treated like 'a terrorist' by prosecutors, his attorney says

NEW YORK — Manhattan federal prosecutors are treating Rudy Giuliani as if he were “the head of a drug cartel or a terrorist,” the former New York mayor's attorney complained in a newly unsealed letter over the FBI raid of his apartment and law office. Giuliani attorney Robert Costello wrote that a review of materials seized during the raids on April 28 cannot begin until he has more information on the feds’ secret seizure of his client's iCloud account in November 2019. Costello argues that much of the information is off-limits to prosecutors in the Southern District of New York due to attorne...

Investigators in Rudy Giuliani's case explained that the reason they sought a warrant for Giuliani's iCloud account was out of fear that he would destroy evidence or tamper with witnesses.

Giuliani, who's known to change phones frequently, left a voicemail in Dec. 2020 for Lev Parnas' lawyer, noting that he was getting rid of another phone. It didn't matter, the FBI already had the information from the year before.

The GOP's 'brain drain' is more proof the party has spiraled into authoritarianism: conservative

On Monday, writing for the conservative Trump-skeptic website The Bulwark, editor Benjamin Parker outlined one of the strongest signs the Republican Party is an authoritarian institution in decline: Its "brain drain" of intellectuals from the party — and its celebration of this phenomenon.

"One of the problems of strangling and restricting a society for political expediency is that there are always other options," wrote Parker. "The people with the most human capital — extraordinary abilities, intelligence, skills, etc. — are the most likely to defect. The Soviet Union and its allies leaked talent at an extraordinary rate. Judging by how many former Republican luminaries have publicly broken with Trump, the Republican party, or both, its brain drain could be even quicker."

Impeachment witness: Trump showed how easy it was for Americans to lose their freedom

On Monday, speaking to The Washington Post, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, a target for retaliation by former President Donald Trump's administration and a key witness at the former president's first impeachment trial, opened up about how the last four years shook her beliefs about the strength of American democratic institutions.

"I was an American who thought that our democracy was strong and enduring and forever," said Yovanovitch. "And frankly, I had this arrogant view that it didn't require much work on our part to keep things going, that we had the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, et cetera. We've discovered over the years, not just in the last administration, there's been an erosion and we have not been the guardians of our institutions, because at the end of the day, the Constitution, as beautiful as it is, it's a piece of paper. You need people to work in the public good to provide services, to defend our nation, to advance our interests."
